Based on Taichi Yamada’s 1987 novel “Strangers”, All of Us Strangers offers a heartbreakingly raw performance from Andrew Scott (Sherlock, Fleabag) as a screenwriter who deals with grief, solitude, and longing in ways that are beyond the boundaries of reality.

Earning six BAFTA nominations, All of Us Strangers also became one of the best independent films to have graced the screens recently. If you’ve missed it during its theatrical run, Searchlight Pictures has just released the movie on digital platforms for streaming online.

What is the plot of All of Us Strangers

This new film adaptation of the 1987 novel follows television writer Adam (Andrew Scott). Seeking inspiration for his writing, he visits his now empty childhood home where he sees his parents, who died in a car accident when he was 12. With his loneliness and grief, he succumbs to his visions, reunites with his parents and has dinner with them. He also promises to visit again.

Back at his apartment building, he encounters his neighbour Harry (Paul Mescal). Earlier, Adam declined Harry’s previous attempt to spend the night with him. He reciprocates this time and the two begin to develop a romantic relationship. As their connection deepens, Adam continues to visit his childhood home, where he spends time with the visions of his parents.

The profoundly emotional film is written and directed by Andrew Haigh (Looking, The North Water) and produced by Graham Broadbent, Peter Czernin, and Sarah Harvey. It received six BAFTA nominations for Outstanding British Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.

Andrew Scott was also nominated for Best Actor at the Golden Globes, while Claire Foy and Paul Mescal received BAFTA nominations for their supporting roles.
