The Best NBN 50 Broadband Plans by Performance and Price

Fast NBN speed

It’s taken a few years longer than expected, but the rollout of Australia’s National Broadband Network is almost complete, with most people now able to connect to it. One of the key benefits of the NBN is that it lets you connect at a far higher speed than ADSL, meaning faster downloads, smoother streaming and letting multiple people in your household do stuff online at the same time.

But to take proper advantage of the extra speed, you’ll need to pick an NBN plan that delivers it. Fortunately, there are some great value plans that are right in the “sweet spot” between speed and price. They’re at the speed tier known as “NBN 50” – 50 Mbps download speed (twice as fast as the fastest ADSL) and 20 Mbps upload speed (a huge 20 times as fast!)

It’s fast becoming the best speed tier to pick for your broadband internet – and it’s not as costly as you might think. Just take a look at what’s on offer:

Now, let’s take a look at the best NBN 50 plans, based both on price and the performance of the network you’ll be connecting through. While the NBN is “one big network” in terms of how customers connect to it, the speed of the connection you actually get can vary widely, depending on how well your chosen provider runs their own network.

One of the key numbers to look at is the provider’s stated “typical evening speed”. While you might expect that on a plan marketed as NBN 50, speed would be exactly as advertised. But that’s not the case in the real world – you’re one of hundreds or thousands using that provider’s connection at the same time, so how they plan for and cope with high evening demand (when we’re all home streaming  Netflix) really matters!

Telstra Unlimited Data Plan

This one might look a little on the high-priced side at first glance, but this $90/month plan is actually more of a mini-bundle which is going to have particular appeal to those who still rely on a home phone line – because one is included in this plan, complete with unlimited calls anywhere in Australia, including to mobile phones. With line rental for a home phone at around $30 these days, and calls adding up quickly as we call friends and family on their mobiles, you can see there’s real value bundled in here.

It’s also one of the best NBN 50 plans around, with a typical evening speed quoted at 44 Mbps – meaning you’re going to get buffer-free streaming no matter what time of the evening you sit down to watch a show or movie. Telstra’s first-rate network is another big plus in that department.

As usual with Telstra, you get a bunch of extras – one month free Foxtel Now access, as well as three months of BINGE subscription, Telstra’s 4G-backup smart modem and the Broadband Protect package for online security. If your budget can stretch to it, this plan is a brilliant choice.

Telstra Internet Plans + Bundles

Internet NBN Plans starting from $75p/m with 3 months BINGE. Or, bundle in Entertainment with unlimited NBN 50 and choose a Telstra TV, Xbox or Foxtel from $99p/m. Join Telstra Plus and get loads of FREE entertainment offers.

MyRepublic Unlimited Essential Plans

Relatively new to Australia, MyRepublic has shaken up broadband overseas with its high-speed, low-cost plans, and here in Australia they’ve been working on doing the same. While still not the cheapest NBN 50 plans around, MyRepublic’s Unlimited Essential plans deliver great value from a network that’s rated at 43 Mbps during the evening peak hours.

You have a choice between a month-to-month plan (so there’s no lock-in if you’re not happy) or a 12-month contract, with both at the same price. There’s one key difference: 12-month contract customers get supplied with a Wi-Fi modem, while month-to-month people need to bring their own.

You can add a pay-as-you-go home phone line for free, but if you want unlimited mobile calls and international calls to select destinations it’ll cost you extra – so this one’s the plan to pick if you don’t care about a home phone at all, or just want one there to receive calls.

iPrimus Unlimited nbn50

iPrimus’ competitive broadband lineup makes them one of the prominent players in Australia’s telco scene. Of course, they have the kind of service that lives up to standards. One of their popular options is the Unlimited nbn50 plan. Running with average sampled evening speed of 41Mbps, it’s fast and at only $75/month. You have the option to lock it in for 12 months with the perk of having waived $99 setup and modem costs.

Otherwise, month to month term is always available for those who prefer flexibility. All of iPrimus’ plans also include a home phone connection with pay as you go calls. Another crucial highlight that makes iPrimus one of the winners is the option to build your plan according to your specific preferences. You can choose the data limit, speed tier, and the contract term. Plus you can add entertainment via Fetch TV from only $10/month.

Belong Broadband Standard Plus

Running on the Telstra network, Belong Broadband is designed as a simple, no-fuss way to get yourself online at the cheapest price possible. Their NBN 50 speed is a little lower than most in the evening, though – quoted as 40 Mbps – but that’s still plenty fast enough to do whatever you need to do online (and you’ll mostly see faster speeds than that anyway).

The key to Belong is the price – $65/month is all you need to pay on a 12-month contract, with a Wi-Fi modem supplied and no setup fees. Month-to-month is available too, if you’re happy to pay $5 extra and bring your own modem.

No home phone is included or available – but instead, Belong gives you a mobile SIM with $80 of credit, just for signing up. For some people, that could be a much more useful perk than a home phone they’ll never use!

Southern Phone NBN Turbo Bundle

One of the most respected internet providers in Australia because of their long-time support for internet customers in regional areas as well as cities, Southern Phone offers a well-priced basic NBN 50 plan – but this bundle more directly offers an alternative to the Telstra one mentioned above.

Priced at $85 a month, it gives you an NBN 50 broadband connection with a typical evening speed of 38 Mbps – which, while the slowest of our choices here, is still plenty fast enough for even multiple 4K Netflix streams.

A Wi-Fi modem is supplied along with a home phone line with unlimited Australian calls, including to mobiles. As an option, you can go for the Triple Bundle instead, which for another $20 (so, a total of $105 a month) also gives you a mobile phone line with 5GB of data.

Which One’s the Best Choice?

You can see from the above options that going for an NBN 50 plan doesn’t automatically mean “expensive” – and the best thing about the NBN is the amount of choice it gives consumers. If you’re after the best value for money for a full-service package that includes home phone, a first-class modem and even online-safety services, Telstra’s hard to beat. But if you’re looking to pay a bit less and get quality broadband without a bunch of extras you don’t need, there’s some quality options available.

FAQs

What is NBN 50?

The acronym NBN stands for Australia’s National Broadband Network and NBN 50 specifically refers to broadband internet plans that offer a maximum download speed of 50 Mbps (which equates to 6.25 megabytes per second) and an upload speed of 20 Mbps (equating to 2.5 megabytes per second). These plans are upper mid-tier plans in terms of speed and price and are typically more than adequate for the vast majority of households and uses.

Is NBN 50 fast enough?

NBN 50 is fast enough for the vast majority of households and uses. With a maximum download speed of 50 megabits per second (equates to 6.25 megabytes per second) an NBN 50 connection can support up to about 8 concurrent HD quality Netflix streams. Users looking for enough speed to support more than a single concurrent 4K Ultra HD quality Netflix stream may however want to consider an NBN 100 plan. Similarly users who frequently upload very large amounts of data (which most home users typically don’t do) will want to ensure that the 20 megabits per second / 2.5 megabytes per second upload speed is fast enough for their requirements.

What is the NBN 50 download speed?

NBN 50 offers a download speed of 50 megabits per second. Converted into the more widely understood “megabytes” unit it equates to a maximum download speed of 6.25 megabytes per second.

What is the NBN 50 upload speed?

NBN 50 offers an upload speed of 20 megabits per second. Converted into the more widely understood “megabytes” unit it equates to a maximum upload speed of 2.5 megabytes per second.
