The documentary series is part of A&E’s growing “Secrets Of” franchise, which seeks to explore the dark side of some of America’s entertainment institutions.

It started with Secrets of Playboy, which exposed truths about the Playboy world and the man who created it – Hugh Hefner. A&E then delved into the shocking scandals that plagued America’s oldest beauty pageant with Secrets of Miss America

Secrets of Penthouse, on the other hand, will focus on the rise and fall of Penthouse’s founder, who, in the 1980s, was one of America’s wealthiest men. The magazine started its operations in the UK back in 1965, then moving to America in 1969 with the goal of competing with Hefner’s more established Playboy.

Offering more explicit photography, sexual advice columns, and investigative reporting to boot, Penthouse took the publishing industry by storm.

From his humble beginnings (he initially photographed most of the models due to lack of resources), Guccione’s life seemingly changed in the blink of an eye, embracing a life of extravagance.

He acquired a mansion in New York with Penthouse “Pets” (featured models) occasionally inhabiting the lavish Manhattan residence. His wealth, however, turned out to be a double-edged sword when he started to alienate himself from his family.

Riding on his success, he sought to create more. But following massive business ventures that didn’t pan out and several controversies including a sexual harassment lawsuit, Guccione lost publishing control.

Attempts were made to salvage both sales and reputation but to no avail, as revenues continued to decrease amidst soaring debts.

In 2003, Penthouse’s parent company filed for bankruptcy protection. Guccione resigned as chairman and CEO of Penthouse International the following year.

The new documentary series about the rise and fall of Penthouse founder Bob Guccione is mostly told through his children, featuring interviews with Nick Guccione and others.

Penthouse editor Peter Bloch was also interviewed.
