How to watch Canelo vs GGG III in Australia

It’s finally here! After two fierce matches, the boxing world gets the long-anticipated third meeting between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin. Which of these boxing superstars will have the last laugh in this historic fight feud?

What’s in this Guide?

Five years ago, Canelo Alvarez encountered Gennady Golovkin for the first time, producing a middleweight fight for the ages. That first bout was marked as a split draw, however many pundits credited the Kazakhstani boxer as the better performer on the night, yet the virtue of the stalemate saw the Mexican retain his titles.

Enraged by the outcry, Canelo made it of paramount importance to defeat GGG and show the world he was better than his opponent. He was able to do that with a majority decision just a year after in the re-match. Without a unanimous decision, Golovkin still believed the rivalry was unsettled and has made it his duty to make it a trilogy. While Canelo has been less enamoured to take the fight initially, it’s on and ready to be settled.

Canelo’s change of heart was most likely prompted by his difficult transition to the light heavyweight division as he lost to Dmitry Bivol. To prompt a payday after his defeat, he gave live boxing fans want they wanted in this historic super middleweight showdown.

Despite now being aged 40, GGG has shifted his game to stay relevant and effective in the division. This was evident by his ninth-round stoppage victory over Ryota Murata in Japan, as he retained his titles and won the WBA super middleweight belt, to earn this trilogy fight.

The event is set to take place on Saturday, September 17th live from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The officially scheduled ring walk times are yet to be confirmed but given the location, you can expect it won’t be a regular fight time for us here in Australia.

The fight will be on DAZN exclusively and falls under their DAZN PPV tier. At present, it is unknown what the cost price will be but it’s likely to be less for existing subscribers than customers who come along just for the fight.  The current price for access to DAZN is $13.99 per month if you’re interested in their other non-PPV content.

It is likely however if you’re new to the platform that if you buy the PPV, DAZN will give you a month’s subscription as well (having done so in the past), allowing you to test drive the service as they try to retain your custom.

Tale of the tape: Canelo vs GGG III

This third meeting has all the makings to be an absolute classic. On paper, Canelo Alvarez has the dominance over the division and is the younger man in this fight, yet has never had to come back from adversity like his last defeat.

Canelo Alvarez: Four-Weight Champion

Canelo’s record speaks for itself: 57 wins from 61 professional fights – with 39 of them coming via knockout, this Mexican fighter has consistently looked to collect silverware across multiple weight divisions.

However, with two losses now on his record, Alvarez’s overall resume and pride took a major dint. He’ll be able to shift the necessary weight down to super middleweight relatively easily, where he’ll be able to summon his power more efficiently.

Gennady Golovkin: The Triple G Boxer

While Golovkin states he’s comfortable at super middleweight, the fact remains that he’s 40 years old and shifting up for this fight – having never fought in this weight class before. If he still has the cardiovascular endurance to carry this weight and then uses it efficiently against his biggest adversary, he’ll be able to make it more than competitive – and could leave Las Vegas as the super middleweight champion.

The rest of the card is expected to live up to the high expectations of the main event, with numerous title fights. Jesse Rodriguez facing off against Mexico’s Israel Gonzalez for the WBC Super Flyweight championship in a highly anticipated match.

A little further down there’s another title on the line as the undefeated Austin Williams goes up against the Englishman, Kieron Conway in a bout that will determine who takes the WBA International Middleweight belt home.

After the fight, if you’re ready to have a look around the DAZN platform you will find lots of other live sports to watch. This includes a wealth of other combat sports cards that don’t require PPV purchase, like promotions from Matchroom, MMA from Brave CF, and Evolution Fight.

It’s not just fighting however with basketball from BIG3, soccer from the Women’s Champions League, the new LIV Golf competition, and triathlon racing from PTO.
