How Will Disney+ Fare in Australia?

Disney Plus streaming on a mobile device

The landscape of streaming in Australia can expect a bit of shake-up with Disney+’s impending arrival. While Disney’s own streaming service is not exactly a pioneer in the field, there’s an extraordinary amount of excitement behind its launch. But how will Disney+ stack up to the competition?

For starters, the type of content (and the quantity) that Disney+ will exclusively deliver is of the astounding kind. Disney has been involved with almost every box office hit to grace the cinema in the last 10 years. That alone is a strong giveaway to the kind of content the entertainment giant can provide to its soon-to-be streaming subscribers.

Owning the rights to several blockbusters in recent years, Disney can produce and host exclusive Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar content. The company’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox only further solidifies Disney’s standing in the streaming market, content-wise. That means hundreds of major movies and thousands of TV episodes to become available at your disposal.

Hulu and ESPN are owned by Disney as well, which means whatever they got going Disney has the liberty to add into its streaming library. In its entirety, Disney+ seems to have all the good stuff and Aussies are not the ones to miss on this sheer amount of entertainment.

Netflix, Stan, Foxtel Now, Amazon Prime Video, and 10 All Access are some of the big names constantly vying for the good spots in Australia’s streaming market. There are also free-to-air streaming apps like SBS On Demand, TenPlay, 9Now and 7plus, which are hard to pass up on since they’re free. So, where does Disney+ fit in all this?

Considering all other options, it’s not hard to see Disney+ as a major contender in the streaming world. For a monthly plan cost of $8.99, it’s lower than most of the streaming selections mentioned above. A whole year of subscription even reduces the total fee to $89.99, making it one of the cheapest streaming services in Australia. There’s also the matter of content. For now, viewers can count on Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, as well as their own, to fuel the company’s primary content lineup. And since Disney owns the exclusive rights to several of Hollywood’s sought-after content, Aussies can only expect more to come.
