If you're looking for a Dakota Fanning fix, here are some more movies and TV shows that you can stream.
Quirky Coraline (Dakota Fanning) moves into a new home with her somewhat absent parents. Deprived of attention and bored out of her mind, Coraline goes for a wander around her new home. It’s not long before Coraline stumbles across a secret door in her home. When she climbs inside she comes out the other end to find a world just like hers — or is it?
It’s clear that this alternate world is much more fun and interesting than her boring life on the other side. Here, she meets her Other Mother (Teri Hatcher) and Other Father (John Hodgman). They look just like her parents, but with buttons for eyes.
The more she visits the Other Mother, the cracks start to show, and she quickly realises she’s in danger. When the fun and games stop, she realises it’s all a trap to lure her in forever.
With the help of an unusual talking black cat (Keith Ferguson), Coraline battles her way back to her real home.
Coraline is one of those movies that stick long after you’ve watched it. And, the more you watch it, the more you read between the lines and find something new. It’s a true gem that we can’t get enough of. Not only has this masterpiece captured the hearts of youngsters, but it’s also won over adults. Coraline is a kid's film — but it’s got some reasonably scary images that might be frightening for some youngsters. If you’ve got little ones who scare easily, you’ll be better off finding them something a bit more lighthearted. Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) and Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005) are brilliant alternatives.
Coraline is labelled a child-friendly film, but it’s got some pretty spooky bits that are too scary for younger kids. It’s recommended for ages 9 and up.
But, don’t let the family-friendly label put you off if you’re older — it’s much more adult than you think. It’s a movie that everyone enjoys, young and old. In fact, grown-ups actually pick up on more hidden easter eggs and subliminal meanings in Coraline.
Craving that whimsical stop-motion charm after watching Coraline? There’s a bunch of movies out there with a similar vibe.
ParaNorman (2012) is made by the same geniuses behind Coraline, so you’ll know it will be good. Rent or buy it on Apple TV. 9 (2009) is another strong contender that was brought to life by Tim Burton’s fantastical mind. You can rent or buy it on Google TV and YouTube. And, we can’t forget about The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) which has the same spooky ambience — stream it on Disney+.
