What is the plot of The Gilded Age?

This new series from HBO follows the rivalry between the new money Russell family and the old money van Rhijn-Brook family during the emergence of substantial wealth in America during the 1880s, the boom years of which is now referred to as the ‘Gilded Age’.

At the centre of the lavish turmoil is Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson), a young woman forced to live with her aunts after the death of her father, moving from her rural hometown to New York City.

Her arrival in the city only aggravates the social tension and animosity between one of her aunts, old money socialite Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) and their stupendously wealthy neighbours, new money contenders George (Morgan Spector) and Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon).

Navigating an unfamiliar world, Marian has to make hard choices should she want to forge her own path.

The Gilded Age is created by Julian Fellowes, with co-writer Sonja Warfield. Michael Engler, Salli Richardson Whitfield, and Deborah Kampmeier serve as directors.
