Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire, Lion) transforms into a full-on action hero in Monkey Man, an action thriller he also co-wrote and directed. Starting solid in his directorial debut, Patel’s high-octane film is a gritty tale of revenge instigated by an underground fighter wearing a gorilla mask.

The source of his rage and trauma: his mother’s death at the hands of the powerful and corrupt. When the opportunity to exact revenge on the sinister elite that continues to prey on the weak finally comes knocking, he takes it with a dangerous resolve and becomes the story’s unlikely saviour.

What’s in this Guide?

After being announced in 2018, Dev Patel’s new action thriller has been confirmed to premiere in April. In Australia, the movie arrives on Thursday, 4 April 2024.

Universal Pictures will be distributing the film. From this we can speculate that it will be available for streaming on BINGE, Foxtel, and Foxtel Now after its theatrical run.

The movie getting added to the libraries of the aforementioned services only follows in the footsteps of other Universal releases like Asteroid City, Knock at the Cabin, The Fabelmans, Cocaine Bear, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and the award-winning historical drama Oppenheimer

It’s worth noting that prior to debuting on subscription services, Universal will first release the movie on digital platforms like Apple TV, Google Play, Prime Video Store, and other similar platforms.

The 2024 movie was initially slated to debut on Netflix, but Jordan Peele saw the film and decided to acquire it via his Monkeypaw Productions, which currently has a distribution deal with Universal.

From producer Jordan Peele and Dev Patel in his directorial debut, the new action thriller follows an unnamed protagonist who regularly dons a monkey mask to fight at an underground ring.

To keep himself afloat, he’s beaten bloody by more popular fighters in exchange for cash. But behind his impassive stance lies a tormented past that still haunts him to this day.

After years of yearning for vengeance, he finds a way to take out his enemies from the inside, employing his now full-fledged strength and tenacity to end their reign of terror.

Introducing an unlikely hero who rises above his deep-seated rage and pain, the viciousness of politics, and ancient Indian mythology, Monkey Man will be on a full-blast action journey to unpack.
