What is the plot of Asteroid City?

The film revolves around the Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention in Asteroid City, a desert community named as such to commemorate the meteor that hit its grounds thousands of years ago. Attendees of the convention are about to receive commendations for their numerous inventions and engage in scholarly competition.

One of the awardees is Woodrow (Jake Ryan), who comes with his father Augie Steenbeck (Jason Schwartzman) and his three younger sisters. His wife died three weeks ago but hasn’t told his children about their mother’s death. Augie also meets famous but cynical actress Midge Campbell (Scarlett Johansson) and her daughter Dinah (Grace Edwards).

The convention is then spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events when an alien casually drops by to get a fragment of the meteorite in the crater. The town is immediately placed under military quarantine with the events in Asteroid City making national headlines.

When the alien visits again, the military plans to extend the quarantine. This time, all the attendees decide to revolt using the children’s inventions to overpower the soldiers.

But as established in the beginning, the events in Asteroid City are staged as a play, written by famed playwright Conrad Earp (Edward Norton). Augie is a character played by actor Jones Hall, who, until now, has one major concern: “He still doesn’t understand the play”.

The film is directed by Wes Anderson from a story he co-created with Roman Coppola. Anderson also produced alongside Steven Rales and Jeremy Dawson.
