One of the most anticipated returning shows this year, Our Flag Means Death Season 2 was finally confirmed to happen in October. The period comedy stars Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi as pirates of opposing personalities and piracy skills. Created for HBO Max, the series is loosely based on the story of Stede Bonnet, a pampered aristocrat who turned to a life of crime by becoming a pirate.

Here’s everything you need to know about the premiere of Our Flag Means Death Season 2 in Australia, including release dates, cast, trailer, and more.

Stede Bonnet is a wealthy landowner who gives up his aristocratic and seemingly charmed life to become a pirate. While this sounds like an amusing plot with so much potential for comedic maneuvers, it did happen with a real-life aristocrat of the same name – his true adventures becoming the inspiration for the HBO series.

It stars Rhys Darby as the wannabe pirate whose amateurish attempts to take the seven seas with his pirate ship Revenge goes sideways, but giving up is not an option, not when he has so much to prove.

Despite his lack of swashbuckling experience and his people’s less enthused follow up comments with regards to his captain skills, he continues to give piracy a go. On the other hand, what he lacks in piracy expertise he makes up with his gentlemanly manners, gaining the moniker “The Gentleman Pirate”.

At some point in his new venture into the pirate world, he meets Blackbeard (Taika Waititi), a revered pirate both fearsome and cunning. With Blackbeard in the picture, Bonnet learns firsthand how it is to be ferocious and become a captain in his own right, or does he, really?

As per history, Bonnet did sail with Blackbeard in the early 1700s, but as per the events in Season 1, Blackbeard’s role in Bonnet’s life is so much more than just a pirate colleague. Stede leads Blackbeard on countless adventures and vice versa, the pair’s friendship growing throughout the season and ultimately developing into romance.

Our Flag Means Death was a success during its first season run that various publications and review platforms cite the show’s upcoming second season as one of the most anticipated TV shows of 2023.

This all thanks to series creator David Jenkins, who also serves as an executive producer alongside Garrett Basch, Dan Halsted, and Taika Waititi.
