How to watch Crime TV series in Australia

Crime

Irvine Welsh’s novels are no strangers to screen adaptations. Trainspotting, The Acid House, and Filth are just some great examples. This year, another creation from Welsh’s roster of literary achievements is to be adapted for television, his 2008 novel, Crime. The TV version, also titled Crime, will have its exclusive premiere on BritBox.

Crime TV show preview

Crime is based on Welsh’s novel of the same name and serves as the sequel to Filth, which had also been adapted for film in 2013 and featured a different main character. In this crime drama, DI Ray Lennox investigates the disappearance of a young girl, but his search for the truth is not without complications and personal challenges. Battling alcohol and drug addiction, he must set aside his internal struggles in order to solve crimes and save lives in the process.

Jamie Bell played the role of DI Lennox in the movie adaptation of Filth, but Crime’s television adaptation has Mission: Impossible 2 actor Dougray Scott playing the part. He will be joined by Joanna Vanderham, Angela Griffin, Ken Stott, and Jamie Sives as part of the main cast. While Welsh’s books have been adapted for movies, this marks the first time his work has been created into a television series with Welsh adapting the novel for TV himself.

A six-part crime thriller series, it’s set in Edinburgh and focuses on Lennox and his investigation. The detective’s personal demons, however, invite more troubles, causing him to constantly clash with some of the people around him. There’s also the urgency to uncover the truth and find the girl as her mysterious disappearance grips the city while bringing paralysing fear. While he and his colleagues try their hardest to get to the bottom of the case, there’s a sinister serial killer lurking in the shadows and waiting to strike. Being a TV series, Crime’s plot will be a bit different from the novel it is based from, which means there may be surprises that are not present in the book.

Audiences have always had a penchant for crime TV shows. Whether it’s stories about mysterious disappearances, organized crime, serial killers, or conspiracies involving rogue CIA or FBI agents, the true crime genre is just unmissable. So if you’re one of the true crime fans and you’ve binged on crime shows like the David Tennant starrer Broadchurch, Twin Peaks, True Detective, Sherlock Holmes, New York City centred-Law & Order: Special Victims Unit or the anthology series American Crime Story, chances are you’ll also like this one.

A BritBox original exclusive, Crime is one of the highly anticipated crime dramas to hit streaming soon. It comes after BBC’s highly acclaimed series, Vigil, which follows a murder investigation aboard a submarine and the conflict this caused with the Navy and British security services.
