Set in the 1930s, All Creatures Great and Small follows veterinary surgeons working in the Yorkshire Dales and their numerous adventures caring for and treating animals, as well as helping their owners. It begins when Siegfried Farnon hires young country vet James Herriot into his veterinary practice at Skeldale House. Joining them is Tristan Farnon, Siegfried’s brother, who also takes on the veterinarian job.

Together, the trio set their country veterinarian practice to good use, notably starting with the Pekingese dog Tricki Woo, owned by Mrs. Pumphrey (played by the late actress Diana Rigg in the first season). When they’re not soothing furry friends, performing operations on farm animals, or getting kicked by a horse, the main characters also navigate life and love amidst their heartwarming and humorous adventures.

In All Creatures Great and Small Season 3, fans were given a long-awaited spectacle that was James and Helen’s wedding. Ever since that proposal in the second season finale, the couple finally tying the knot was what every fan had been looking forward to seeing.

All Creatures Great and Small Season 4, meanwhile, focused on James and Helen starting a family; however, with World War II looming and with James deciding to enlist, the recently married couple had to go through major challenges again. We also learned what happened to James and Tristan, who also enlisted, following the outbreak of the war. Also joining the fourth season are new characters: student vet Richard Carmody (James Anthony-Rose) and bookkeeper Miss Harbottle (Neve McIntosh).

As for All Creatures Great and Small Season 5, you’ll just have to wait and see with new episodes arriving in Australia soon! The new season also introduces a new character — Mr. Bosworth. He’ll be played by Ted Lasso actor Jeremy Swift.

The All Creatures Great and Small remake is based on the book series by Alf Wight, also using his main character’s name, James Herriot, as his pen name. The stories are inspired by his experiences as a veterinary surgeon. A definite must-see if you’re looking for a TV drama that’s character-driven and blends well with humour, the 2020 adaptation of the series exceeds expectations.

You can watch the trailer for the new season right here.

The All Creatures Great and Small cast is headlined by Nicholas Ralph playing the lead protagonist James Herriot. Joining him in the main cast are Samuel West as Siegfried Farnon, Rachel Shenton as Helen Alderson, and Anna Madeley as Mrs Hall.

Patricia Hodge also reprises her role as Mrs Pumphrey, after she took over the role in the All Creatures Great and Small Season 2 following the death of Dame Diana Rigg.

After his absence in All Creatures Great and Small Season 4, Callum Woodhouse is back as Tristan Farnon in the new season.

We’ve listed the complete cast of All Creatures Great and Small new adaptation here.

  • Nicholas Ralph as James Herriot
  • Samuel West as Siegfried Farnon
  • Rachel Shenton as Helen Alderson
  • Anna Madeley as Mrs Audrey Hall
  • Patricia Hodge as Mrs Pumphrey
  • Neve McIntosh as Miss Harbottle
  • James Anthony-Rose as Richard
  • Tony Pitts as Richard Alderson
  • Jeremy Swift as Mr. Bosworth

Five seasons are available with the new season launching in Australia from 12 November. All the previous seasons are still available to watch on demand on BritBox. Even the All Creatures Great and Small original series, which aired for seven seasons from 1978 to 1990, are also on BritBox.

Four Christmas specials for All Creatures Great & Small have also aired: “The Night Before Christmas” in 2020, “The Perfect Christmas” in 2021, “Merry Bloody Christmas” in 2022, and “On a Wing and a Prayer” in 2023.

To watch on free to air, selected episodes of the series are on ABC iView. The latest season is currently not available on the network, but if past seasons are anything to go by, new episodes may air on the network some time in the future.

Charming dramas that revolve around family, love, and friendship are bound to have perpetual appeal, which is why this TV adaptation of Alf Wight’s books is largely popular.

If you’re searching for similar shows, Call the Midwife, The Durrells and Sanditon are just a few that quickly come to mind. Classics like As Time Goes By and Last Tango in Halifax are also a must-try. Of course, the original series shouldn’t be overlooked.

Alternatively, some of the latest releases on BritBox you might want to watch are new seasons of Shetland, Ridley, Avoidance, and many more.
