Flight Risk: Release date and where to watch in Australia

Mark Wahlberg is a terrifying hitman in Mel Gibson’s new action thriller, Flight Risk.

After a few months of delay, the new feature film is finally making its theatrical debut in January. Flight Risk marks Gibson’s return in the director’s chair after his acclaimed war film Hacksaw Ridge.

Compared to his earlier projects, which also include Braveheart, Apocalypto, and The Passion of the Christ, Flight Risk appears to be a straightforward action flick that involves only three characters on a small plane.

We’ll have to wait and see how Gibson turns this into a claustrophobic aviation thriller that will keep us on the edge of our seats. Here’s everything to know about the new thriller.

Flight Risk is coming to Australian cinemas on Thursday, 23 January 2025. It was originally set to be released on 18 October 2024, but was delayed until this month.

The movie opting for a January release seems to follow in the footsteps of other action films (e.g., The Beekeeper, Plane), which managed to succeed at the box office despite the first month of the year being a critical time for new releases.

With Gibson and Wahlberg headlining the film, who also played father and son in the Christmas comedy Daddy’s Home 2, their latest collaboration stands a fighting chance.

Don’t miss the premiere of Mel Gibson’s Flight Risk in Australia on 23 January!

With Lionsgate distributing the film internationally, we can speculate that the Flight Risk movie will be streaming in Australia via BINGE, Foxtel, and Foxtel Now.

Other Lionsgate releases like John Wick: Chapter 4, Miller’s Girl, Expend4bles, and Silent Night  just to name a few, have also made their subscription streaming debuts on the aforementioned services.

Amazon Prime Video is also another possibility since Lionsgate films like The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, Arthur the King (which also starred Wahlberg), and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes are currently streaming on Prime Video.

This upcoming high-stakes suspense thriller follows an air marshal (Michelle Dockery) accompanying a fugitive (Topher Grace) to trial, scheduled to testify against a powerful mob. But as they cross the Alaskan wilderness, tensions soar as they realise that not everyone on board shares the same itinerary.

It turns out that the pilot transporting them is actually a hitman sent to kill the informant. Chaos ensues and survival instinct kicks in and on full blast, especially when a bigger plane is sent to eliminate all of them.

The film is directed by Mel Gibson and stars Academy Award-nominee Mark Wahlberg, Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery, and That ’70s Show actor Topher Grace.

Written by Jared Rosenberg, it was voted onto the “Black List” of the most-liked but unproduced screenplays in Hollywood in 2020, until about three years later when Gibson was confirmed to direct and Wahlberg to star. Gibson also serves as producer alongside John Davis, John Fox, and Bruce Davey.
