Volcano Man is the product of decades of footage that filmmaker James Crawley’s father, Richard Crawley, has been taking since the beginning, starring his wife Carol and son James. With James discovering his dad’s hidden tapes, he saw their lives in a way that’s raw, heartbreaking, and incredible all at the same time.

The result is a feature documentary called Volcano Man, featuring their family, pets, a basket of tomatoes, a Mick Jagger tee, and every small and big things that make life simply extraordinary.

The documentary is James Crawley’s feature debut that premiered at the 2022 Melbourne International Film Festival. Now available for streaming online, find out how you can watch the new documentary film using this guide.

What’s in this Guide?

When filmmaker James Crawley discovers his father’s hidden video tapes, he recognises simplicity and greatness in them. And so, James decides to reveal the real Richard Crawley, an eccentric photographer and documentarian who lives on top of a dormant volcano.

His approach to life has always been brightly positive and utterly explosive, but hours and hours of old video tapes reveal a different person as he grieves the loss of his wife, who passed away at age 52.

The journey of creating this film between a father and a son paves the way for long-buried sentiments and distant memories to make their way up to the surface. At its core, Volcano Man is about two men still reeling from a tragic loss and how they have different ways of showing it.

It’s also a celebration of the life lived as Richard filmed every moment (including baby James eating an orange for an entire hour) simply because to him, every moment is worthwhile.
