How to watch When a City Rises in Australia

“Fight for freedom” and “Stand with Hong Kong” were the messages that reverberated across the globe during the 2019 Hong Kong pro-democracy protests. Hundreds of thousands of protesters decried the Fugitive Offenders amendment bill on extradition by the Hong Kong government, which would have allowed Mainland China to summon people across the border for trial. As a result, Hong Kong witnessed one of the largest series of demonstrations in the history of the country.

Documenting the heart of the protests and introducing remarkable individuals whose fearlessness prevailed over threats of violence is the documentary film When a City Rises. It is the collective work of seven Hong Kong filmmakers, who filmed the protests through different lens, but with one message of hope and solidarity in the midst of chaos. In Australia, When a City Rises becomes available for streaming on demand, and using this guide you can find out how and where to watch it.

What’s in this Guide?

In March 2019, the world saw images of protesters in black calling their government to protect their freedom. While the Hong Kong government suspended their highly controversial bill in June, protests grew bigger in strength and number in response to the violence inflicted on the protesters by the police. By September, the government withdrew the bill.

When a City Rises particularly follows some Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters – a 21-year-old law student, a teenage couple, and a young father of two in their dangerous fight for a democratic future. The unbearably tense picture offers the most complete accounts of the Hong Kong pro-democracy protests, allowing audiences to relive moments which have inspired other protests that followed worldwide.

The investigative documentary film is directed by Evie Cheung, Cathy Chu, Huang Yuk-Kwok , Kar Man Ip, Iris Kwong, Jenn Lee, and Han Yan Yuen; while Yuling Cho, Cathy Chu, Amy Ip, Sharon Yeung, are Han Yan Yuen are credited for the movie’s cinematography. Find out when you can watch it in Australia with the information below.

In one of the country’s most crucial events, which were broadcast across international media, relationships suffer and form amidst tear gas – the fearlessness and patriotism that fuels it is captured in When a City Rises.

The documentary had its international premiere last year at Warsaw International Film Festival, New Zealand Film Festival, and Sydney Film Festival, among others. Finally, after several months, it will be available on streaming TV. In Australia, When a City Rises premieres on DocPlay and becomes available starting 26th May 2022.
