February 28, 2024

Grey’s Anatomy is known for delivering shocking finales, and the packed finale last season was pretty much a testament to the show’s dedication to giving us high-intensity drama. Finally, after a year, our favourite fictional doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial are back for Grey’s Anatomy Season 20, hopefully bringing us the answers we need after last season’s cliffhanger ending.

Serving as the show’s milestone season, Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 will bring more drama, romance, and high-stakes decisions as characters’ strength and resilience are further put to the test. On a positive note, familiar faces we haven’t seen in awhile are set to return like Jessica Capshaw’s Dr. Arizona Robbins. But what about the show’s lead protagonist, Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey? As per the trailer, yes!

We round up other details about Grey’s Anatomy‘s return for season 20.

Grey’s Anatomy has become a TV phenomenon since the first season premiered in 2005. About 19 years later, the show is still highly rated and extremely popular amongst viewers.

The long-running medical drama is now in its twentieth season, which you can watch in Australia via Disney+. Prior seasons are also available to stream on Disney’s streaming service.

Grey’s Anatomy just beat ER for having the longest tenure on primetime TV, airing for 20 seasons now compared to ER’s 15. It follows the personal and professional lives of the surgical interns, residents, and attendings at the Seattle Grace Hospital (now Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital).

They would later become seasoned doctors, although their professional duties and accomplishments always have repercussions on their personal relationships. Every day, they’re also faced with life or death decisions, which either make or break their characters and resolutions.

In season 20, medical emergencies remain intense at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, especially after that cliffhanger ending during Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 finale when Dr. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) complained about an annoying toothache that shockingly transformed into a cardiac arrest. We’re still unsure of the cardiothoracic surgeon’s fate but we’ll soon find out once new episodes begin rolling out in March.

The fate of interns Lucas and Simone who performed an unauthorised surgery on Sam Sutton after Dr. Altman collapsed is also still unclear. With no attendings around, the duo made the bold yet fearless decision to operate, however, it wasn’t enough to save Sam’s life. There’s bound to be repercussions for this tragic chaos, which is why fans have been eagerly waiting for Grey’s Anatomy’s return.

Meanwhile, we know the show has recently introduced new cast members in the previous season, that’s why fans will be delighted to still see some familiar faces walking the halls of Grey Sloan, including Chandra Wilson’s Miranda Bailey, James Pickens Jr.’s Richard Webber, and Ellen Pompeo herself, who’s been confirmed to appear as Meredith Grey in at least four episodes this season. She will also remain as the show’s narrator and serve as an executive producer.

The official trailer for the new season of Grey’s Anatomy is out. You can watch it right here.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 introduced new cast members including Alexis Floyd (Inventing Anna) as Simone Griffin, Adelaide Kane (Reign) as Jules Millin, Midori Francis (Sex Lives of College Girls) as Mika Yasuda, Niko Terho as Lucas Adams, and Harry Shum Jr. (Glee) as Daniel “Blue” Kwan.

Elle Pompeo, who stars as Meredith Grey, has also been confirmed to appear in at least four episodes this season. Other familiar faces returning include James Pickens Jr. as Richard Webber and Chandra Wilson as Miranda Bailey. Meanwhile, after leaving the show during season 14, Jessica Capshaw returns in season 20 as Dr. Arizona Robbins, as well as Alex Landi’s Dr. Nico Kim.
