How to win Set for Life

You will need to select 7 main numbers between 1 and 44 in order to answer the question of how to win Set for Life. The first 7 balls drawn are the winning numbers and the remaining 2 balls are the supplementary numbers, which are then used to identify prizes in Divisions 2, 4, 6 and 8. Unlike other lotteries, Set for Life allows you to play your numbers across 7 consecutive daily draws, so there's a daily draw instead of weekly.

How many numbers to win Set for Life?

You need 7 numbers to win Division 1 in Set for Life (biggest prize pool of $20,000 each month for 20 years) with your entry matching 7 numbers in a single game panel. However, the odds of winning a prize increase because you can win with only 3 winning numbers plus 1 supplementary number in a single game.

Frequently Asked Questions about Oz Lotto

Who Runs Oz Lotto?

As Australia’s first truly national lottery, Oz Lotto is owned and operated by the Tatts group, the same people behind long-running lotteries such as Powerball, Tattslotto and several other well-known state-based lotteries.

How Long Have Oz Lotto and Powerball Been Around?

With its first draw taking place in February 1994, Oz Lotto now has a 27-year history as one of Australia’s major lotteries, offering frequent large jackpot prizes. Powerball followed a couple of years later, and recently broke the Australian record for the largest ever jackpot prize on offer - $150 million.

When is the Weekly Oz Lotto Draw Held?

The nationally televised weekly Oz Lotto draw happens every Tuesday night at 8.30pm AEST (or 9.30pm AEDT during daylight saving months).

When is the Weekly Powerball Draw Held?

Each week’s Powerball draw takes place on a Thursday night, at 8.30pm AEST (or 9.30pm AEDT during daylight saving months).

Are the Lottery Draws on TV?

Yes, both Oz Lotto and Powerball are drawn live on 7TWO every Tuesday and Thursday respectively at 8.30pm.

How Late Can I Buy a Ticket for the Week’s Oz Lotto or Powerball Draws?

No matter which outlet you buy your weekly ticket for each lottery from, all ticket sales stop an hour before the draw takes place - so you’ll need to purchase before 7.30pm AEST each Tuesday for Oz Lotto, and each Thursday for Powerball.

How Many Numbers Do I Need to Match to Win?

To win the top prize in each lottery the conditions are different. In Oz Lotto you must match all seven main numbers drawn. In Powerball, on the other hand, you need to match all seven main numbers and the Powerball number.

Which Lottery Has the Biggest Jackpots?

While Powerball still holds the record for the largest ever lottery jackpot in Australia, it is also harder to win because of the need to match the Powerball as well as the seven regular balls. Oz Lotto still has regular large jackpots but as it’s easier to win, they tend to be more rare.

What are the Odds of Winning the Top Prize, or Any Prize?

All lotteries in Australia have to disclose the odds of winning prizes, so the chances of winning either lottery are well known. With Powerball, the odds of grabbing the jackpot are 1 in 134.5 million - one of the reasons for that lottery’s frequent huge jackpot prize amounts. In Oz Lotto, the odds are 1 in 45 million. However, the chances of winning any prize in Powerball are greater, at 1 in 44 compared to 1 in 55 for Oz Lotto.

Is There an Age Requirement to Buy Lottery Tickets?

Yes - Australian law requires anyone buying a lottery ticket be 18 years of age of older.

If I Win a Prize in Oz Lotto or Powerball, Do I Have to Pay Tax on the Winnings?

If you’re an Australian citizen, the good news is that prize winnings from lotteries are not subject to any form of tax - the full prize amount is yours to enjoy. If you’re playing from overseas, though, your winnings may be taxed by your home country.

How Much does it Cost to Buy a Ticket in Oz Lotto and Powerball?

A single-game Oz Lotto ticket costs less than $2, though a more popular entry is the multi-game QuickPick which starts at $11.90 for 9 entries. A standard Powerball ticket is a little more expensive, starting with a 4-game ticket for $5.40, with a PowerHit entry costing $27 for one game.

What is a QuickPick Ticket?

Hugely popular for years, QuickPick tickets give you multiple entries in a week’s draw using different randomly selected numbers in each. The odds of winning are exactly the same, and since they reduce the time needed to buy a ticket to almost zero, they’re a great time-saver.

Is There an App to Buy Tickets and Check Results?

Yes! Both Oz Lotto and Powerball be played via The Lott app, available for both iOS and Android. It allows instant digital purchase of tickets as well as scanning and checking paper ones, and lets you check all the results as soon as they happen.

What is the Minimum Jackpot Prize?

For Oz Lotto, the jackpot for winning Division 1 (the top prize) starts at $3 million and grows each week until it is won. For Powerball, the starting jackpot is $4 million and regularly grows to huge amounts.

Can I Subscribe to the Lotteries?

Yes, you can start a subscription so that your weekly entries to either lottery are automatic, and you’re notified immediately about any winnings. You can start a subscription most easily from The Lott app for smartphones and tablets.
