Sarah arrives at the school, determined to transform both the teaching and the buildings.

Sarah’s ambitions for her school find their focus in Lydia Holly, the gifted oldest child of a labourer and his wife who live with six children in the nearby shanty town.

Sarah fights to regain control of her life after one night with Carne forces her to question everything she thought she knew. Carne, meanwhile, is forced to reappraise his own life. As the Depression takes its toll on Yorkshire farming, and as he reluctantly comes to terms with the knowledge that his beloved Muriel can never return to him, Carne begins to plan for a different future. When tragedy hits, Sarah is bereft.
