Set in 1960s New York, Tom Ripley (Scott) is a down-on-his-luck man who keeps himself afloat by whatever means necessary, which is why he’s become a grifter.

When wealthy shipping magnate Herbert Greenleaf  mistakes him as his rebellious son Dickie’s close friend, he is hired to go to Italy and convince Dickie (Johnny Flynn) to return home and take over the family business.

In Italy, he meets Dickie and his girlfriend Marge (Dakota Fanning). After spending more time with the former and enjoying the lavish lifestyle that comes with his friendship with Dickie, Ripley becomes obsessed with him. Resolved to never go back to his meager life, he dangerously resorts to deceit, fraud, and eventually murder to secure his newfound life of luxury.

“The Talented Mr. Ripley” was first brought to life by Anthony Minghella in the 1999 movie adaptation, starring Matt Damon in the titular role, Jude Law as Dickie and Gwyneth Paltrow as Marge. It’s based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel of the same name.

Development for the series began in 2019 when Andrew Scott was announced to play the lead. Back then, it was originally slated to premiere on Showtime until early 2023 when it was confirmed that it would air on Netflix instead.
