David Nicholls’ bestseller novel, One Day, is getting a television remake 13 years after the film that starred Anne Hatheaway and Jim Sturgess debuted on our screens. This time, the poignant love story will be reimagined as a limited series that has been confirmed to premiere in February.

Dex and Em’s enduring love story is one of a kind that it continues to captivate, which is why a television adaptation is welcome news for long-time fans of the book.

One Day (TV show) plot and cast

One Day revolves around long-time friends Dex and Emma, whose paths crossed for the first time during their college graduation in 1988. Despite being drawn to one another, they take the friendship route knowing they’ll soon lead completely different lives.

And completely different lives they really led, although every year on 15 July, for the next twenty years, they reunite to revisit their friendship. There have been attempts to start a romantic relationship but timing has never been in their favour. They manage to stay best friends nevertheless, their bond strengthened as years go by.

There have been a mix of heartbreaks and triumphs over the course of their lives. They’ve drifted apart. But their connection is much stronger than their shortcomings. They always, eventually, find their way back to each other no matter what.

The novel was first adapted for the big screen in 2011 and was a commercial success. Thirteen years later, fans of the novel will once again witness Dex and Emma’s story on the screen, only this time there’ll be more of these beloved characters since the series will be told over 14 episodes.

The new cast of One Day is headlined by Leo Woodall (The White Lotus) as Dex, Ambika Mod (This Is Going to Hurt) as Emma, and Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark) as Sylvie.

Support cast members include Essie Davis as Alison, Tim McInnerny as Stephen, Toby Stephens as Lionel, and Joely Richardson as Helen. Jonny Weldon, Brendan Quinn, Billie Gadsdon, Amber Grappy, Adam Loxley, and John Macmillan also star.
