What is the plot of the Napoleon movie?

This new historical film about Napoleon Bonaparte aims to explore the French military commander’s roots and his meteoric rise to power during the turn of the 19th century.

Crowning himself emperor in 1804 after staging a coup d’état, historians attribute his success to his cunning, ruthlessness, and reputable military background.

Out of the 81 battles that Napoleon fought in, the film will feature six in its storyline, including The Siege of Toulon (1793), 13 Vendémiaire, Battle of the Pyramids, Battle of Austerlitz, and the Battle of Waterloo.

More than exploring his military career and his eventual leadership, Napoleon shines a light on his volatile relationship with his one true love, his first wife Josephine.

Napoleon also examines the French leader’s excessive ambitions, which drove him to end his marriage after it became known that Josephine couldn’t bear an heir. His lingering desire to conquer Europe eventually leads to his downfall and exile.

Award-winning filmmaker Ridley Scott directed Napoleon from a screenplay by David Scarpa, best known for his works in The Day the Earth Stood Still and All the Money in the World. Scott and Phoenix also serve as producers alongside Kevin J. Walsh and Mark Huffam.

The 2023 Napoleon movie marks the second collaboration between Scott and Phoenix after working together in 2000’s Gladiator.
