Initially making its world premiere at the 2023 Tribeca Festival, the documentary has been confirmed to debut on subscription streaming from Wednesday, 5 June, exclusively on Paramount+.

The voice and the colourful character behind “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” is the subject of the new acclaimed documentary Let the Canary Sing, following Cyndi Lauper’s early beginnings and her eventual rise to stardom. 

Her success in the 1980s starting with her first album “She’s So Unusual”, a fitting description to her “ever-evolving punk style”, became the first debut album by a female artist to land four top-five hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Since then, the “True Colors” singer has become an icon in the entertainment world, lauded for her uniqueness, talent, and enduring legacy. 

Let the Canary Sing was directed by Alison Ellwood, the award-winning director of The Go-Go’s. Ellwood also produced the movie with Trevor Birney, Eimhear O’Neill, Andrew Tully, Tom Mackay, Richard Story,  Rebecca Teitel, Sophia Dilley,  Wesley Adams,  Lisa Barbaris, and Gregory P. Cimino III.
