Killers of the Flower Moon: TV release date and where to watch in Australia

January 10, 2024

Martin Scorsese’s highly anticipated epic Western film, Killers of the Flower Moon, has finally hit the big screen. Given its critical and commercial success, it’s clear his latest film is a heart-pounding cinematic journey that characterises most of the director’s work throughout the years.

Starring frequent Scorsese collaborators Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, and Lily Gladstone in her first leading role, the movie revolves around the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation. It’s set in 1920s Oklahoma; the string of brutal crimes starting after big oil deposits were discovered beneath their land.

Following its theatrical run, Martin Scorsese’s new movie will also drop on Apple TV+. The streaming service financed and distributed the film alongside Paramount Pictures.

However, with names like Scorsese, De Niro, and DiCaprio headlining the movie, it would seem that a subscription premiere will take a bit longer than other Apple Original films.

Update: Killers of the Flower Mean has been confirmed to premiere on Apple TV+ on 12 January, more than two months after its theatrical release.

There’s also an ongoing deal for a longer free subscription – get 3 months of Apple TV+ when you buy an eligible Apple device. In Scorsese’s first Western feature film, which is based on the true story of one of the most appalling murder schemes in American history, we’re taken back to the early 20th century when oil was discovered in Oklahoma, the home of the Osage tribe.

Many Osage acquired wealth as a result; however, during the 1920s, which came to be known as the Reign of Terror, they became targeted by outsiders consumed by greed to take over their land and wealth. This sparked a major investigation conducted by the newly formed FBI (BOI back then).

Development for the film began in 2016 with Martin Scorsese tapped to direct the following year. Nearly seven years later, it finally premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival last May 2023 to widespread acclaim.

In addition to De Niro, DiCaprio, and Gladstone, the movie completes its stellar casting with Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser, and John Lithgow joining the ensemble.

The Western epic crime film is based on the nonfiction book of the same name by David Grann. Paramount Pictures and Apple TV+ distributed the movie.

At the 2024 Golden Globes, the film received seven nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director for Scorsese, and Best Screenplay for Scorsese and Eric Roth. Gladstone, in her first leading role, won the Golden Globes for Best Actress.

Scorsese and De Niro have been long-time collaborators, starting with the 1973 film Mean Streets. They’ve since worked together in several acclaimed films, such as Goodfellas, Casino, Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, Taxi Driver, Cape Fear, and many others.

Still active as a filmmaker, Scorsese also began working with DiCaprio in several major films, starting with Gangs of New York, followed by The Aviator, The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Shutter Island. Killers of the Flower Moon is the first film in which Scorsese worked with both De Niro and DiCaprio.
