How to watch Black Widow in Australia

Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff finally got a solo Marvel superhero movie with 2021’s Black Widow. Exploring the titular character’s history, from when she was training in the Red Room to becoming a lethal KGB assassin, Black Widow unveils the iconic character’s dark past and how she ultimately frees herself from the evil ties that restrain her heroic nature. Available for streaming instantly, find out how you can watch Black Widow online in this guide.

What’s in this Guide?

Before she became an Avenger, Natasha Romanoff was part of KGB’s Black Widow program, training girls to become the world’s most fearsome assassins with the help of a chemical mind-control agent. After defecting to S.H.I.E.L.D., she attempts to leave her dark past behind.

When a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises, she becomes resolved to deal with some unfinished business, as well as atone for the horrible acts she had committed back when she was a spy and an assassin. Her deemed violation of the Sokovia Accords later turns her into a fugitive, forcing her to escape.

While on the run, she eventually reunites with her surrogate parents Melina and Alexei, as well as surrogate younger sister Yelena Belova. Together, they become stronger to defeat a long-standing enemy who yearns to gain more power and continue his atrocious acts through the Black Widow program.

Black Widow is a prequel film that occurs in the MCU timeline between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, making it the fans’ last action-packed journey with the heroine before she sacrifices herself in Avengers: Endgame.

Black Widow hit Australian cinemas on 8th July 2021 and was simultaneously available for streaming on 9th July 2022 via Disney’s Premier Access. It was the fourth movie to have an instant streaming debut on Premier Access (one-off fee of $34.99) after Mulan, Raya and the Last Dragon, and Cruella. Black Widow finally became available to all Disney Plus subscribers at no extra cost from 6th October 2021.

Black Widow’s solo movie has been delivered by Marvel as promised, but is there any chance of Black Widow 2 happening? It doesn’t seem unlikely, considering Black Widow is a character also played by Romanoff’s surrogate sister Yelena Belova, who also appeared in Hawkeye, Marvel’s Disney Plus Clint Barton spin-off series.

Black Widow director Cate Shortland also said in an interview she’d be willing to return. With Johansson departing Marvel Studios for good, the only way for Black Widow to have a sequel is to focus on a different character. And Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova made a striking impression in Black Widow so it might as well be her. Speculations (and wishful thinking) aside, Black Widow’s future is still unknown.

To access Black Widow, watch online on Disney Plus Australia with a streaming plan for only $13.99 per month. Being produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it’s unlikely for the film to be available elsewhere except pay per view, of course.
