Trying to find the best internet provider for your needs can be like looking for a needle in a haystack – there’s that much choice around. The arrival of the NBN has brought with it the ability to access dozens of different providers. But how do you work out which ones are worth considering? What are Sydney’s best NBN plans, and which are the best value? The answer’s not cut and dried – a lot will depend on your specific needs. To get you started, here are some of the best providers and their best value plans.
The Best Internet Providers in Sydney

---|---|---|---|
1 | Southern Phone | 93% | Read review |
2 | Telstra | 89% | Read review |
3 | Activ8Me | 85% | Read review |
4 | MyRepublic | 83% | Read review |
5 | iPrimus | 81% | Read review |

The Fastest Internet in Sydney
Consistently rated #1 in Australia for Netflix streaming speed and quality (by Netflix itself) you’re in good hands on the Telstra network, which is backed by decades of experience in building the very backbone of the Australian internet – many third-party providers use Telstra’s services to deliver their broadband, so why not go straight to the source?
Telstra Internet has the advantage of being an affordable all-in-one bundle that gets you unlimited broadband, a home phone line and unlimited calls anywhere in Australia (including to mobiles) for less than many competing providers charge for internet alone. Telstra’s network is tuned for raw speed, and you’ll be assured of service no matter what thanks to the 4G backup in the supplied modem.
The Cheapest Internet in Sydney
One of the minor down sides to the NBN is that the national network, which has cost billions to build out, has to recoup its costs, meaning the prices the NBN charges providers for access tend to keep monthly prices high. But if you’re on a tight budget, don’t worry – there’s an affordable option.
Southern Phone has been delivering phone and internet services across Australia for many years, and has built up a great reputation with the community for its quality and customer service. Their Unlimited Broadband Standard plan gives you a NBN 25 connection – still fast enough for 4K video streaming if you want – with unlimited data and no lock-in contract for only $65/month.
Another great option is Telstra with revamped broadband plans, catering to your need of flexibility and affordability. Plans now only start at $75/month with no lock-in contract. iPrimus is also a contender with an NBN50 unlimited plan for only $75/month with the option to add Fetch TV while Dodo offers the same plan for only $70 per month.
Unlimited Broadband in Sydney
Not all that long ago, trying to get a quality unlimited broadband plan was no easy task – some of the fastest and best-run networks preferred to put monthly data limits on most users and used it as a means of setting the price. These days, though, unlimited data is more or less the norm. If you want to save a few dollars, you can go for a data-limited plan with most providers, but we don’t think it’s worth the tiny saving unless you’re 100% sure you simply won’t be using much data.
One provider that makes the question much more simple is MyRepublic, a relatively new company in Australia but well known overseas. Every single one of their plans comes with unlimited data, with prices starting at $59/month for NBN 25 speed and the sweet spot being $69 for NBN 50. MyRepublic also is the only broadband provider in Sydney to offer plans targeted specifically at gamers, with a network that’s custom-tweaked to make sure no matter what game you’re playing, you get the best possible experience.
The NBN Rollout in Sydney
While the NBN has taken a lot longer than anticipated to fully roll out – the planned completion date was 2016 – the many technical challenges in building a nationwide broadband network have been overcome and the final connections are expected to be made during 2020. Most people in Sydney now have access to the NBN; over 3.3 million homes and businesses across New South Wales are now listed as Ready to Connect, and 2 million of those already have done so. Only around 50,000 premises remain to be covered across the entire state.
Sydney’s varied terrain has made for some challenges in rolling out the NBN to some areas, and in a few cases, a technology mainly designed for remote areas – Fixed Wireless – has been used instead of running cables down the street. It’s rare, but if your home or business has a fixed wireless connection, you’re still able to easily connect to the same NBN; however, you’ll be limited to a speed of 25 Mbps at the most. Improvements to fixed wireless are in the pipeline, though, and for most people, it’ll still be an improvement on the ADSL they had before.
You can check whether your suburb, street or building is connected to the NBN – and via which type of NBN technology – by making use of the interactive NBN map of Sydney below.

ADSL Internet in Sydney
With all internet talk these days seeming to revolve around the NBN, it’s easy to forget that ADSL still exists and is still being used in some areas of Sydney where the NBN has yet to be connected . It’s increasingly rare – as mentioned above, there are now only around 50,000 premises state-wide that are yet to get the NBN – but if you’re still waiting on the new network, rest assured that ADSL is still available.
iPrimus, with their comprehensive range of services, still offers ADSL plans at $60/month, and a key benefit of going with them is the way they can convert your service over to the NBN when the connection finally arrives, without you having to go and track down a new provider. If you’re looking for the best ADSL provider among the shrinking range of options, they’re definitely worth considering.
ADSL still provides a usable experience for most people, with streaming services now able to deliver high definition video at extremely low data rates – meaning that you might have to wait a little longer for your show or movie to start playing, but once it does it should be a fairly seamless experience.

Finding Sydney’s Best NBN Provider – Compare and Save!
With so many options available, it’s important that you shop around and look at the various bundles and internet plans available to get the one that’s right for you. Take a look at our interactive comparison list above, and use that as a great starting point. Remember, with the NBN you’re free to change providers at any time (as long as you’re not on a contract plan) so don’t worry – if you’re not happy with the provider you choose, you can change. The same flexibility isn’t available for ADSL customers, unfortunately, but most people will only be using ADSL as a temporary thing at this point, while awaiting the NBN.
Whether it’s fast internet, cheap internet or a combination of the two, there’s the right provider and plan out there for you to get your home or business in Sydney connected to the wider world.
