Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is set 300 years after Caesar’s reign and the events of the prior film War for the Planet of the Apes (2017).

Featuring a new set of cast that includes Owen Teague (It, It Chapter Two) and Freya Allan (The Witcher, Into the Badlands), this new instalment to the epic franchise follows a new era where apes live harmoniously, having established themselves as the dominant species. The humans, on the other hand, have been relegated to being haunted and living in fear.

When a young ape comes to question everything about the past, he decides to follow what he thinks is right, clashing with a tyrannical leader dead set on starting his empire.

Three hundred years after the events of War for the Planet of the Apes, ape civilisations have thrived and turned themselves into superior species. Humans, on the other hand, become the hunted ones, regressing into a feral state as they live in the shadows.

Tyrannical ape leader Proximus (Kevin Durand), in his quest to build his empire, twists Caesar’s teachings and spreads an erroneous history to justify his desire for power by enslaving other clans.

One young chimpanzee named Noa (Teague) eventually recognises this injustice, leading him to embark on a journey where he meets a human girl named Mae (Allan).

With a dangerous reign set to cement the dominance of apes and the enslavement of humans, Noah, alongside Mae, will be faced with a difficult choice – to perform an obvious duty or continue Caesar’s hope for peace between apes and humans.

The new Planet of the Apes movie is directed by Wes Ball from a screenplay written by Josh Friedman. Ball also produced the film alongside Joe Hartwick Jr, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Jason T. Reed.

As Ball had previously confirmed, the new Planet of the Apes movie will not serve as a reboot to the franchise, but a chronicling of “Caesar’s legacy”.

Hence, a new character nearly three centuries following Caesar’s rise to leadership is introduced, with the hope of continuing what the noble ape leader had started many generations ago.

You can watch the official trailer for the movie here:

The cast is headlined by Owen Teague as the young ape Noah, while The Witcher actress Freya Allan stars as a feral human named Mae. Kevin Durand plays main antagonist Proximus.

You can find the announced cast list for the new film below:

  • Kevin Durand as Proximus Caesar
  • Peter Macon as Raka
  • William H. Macy as Trevathan
