In Boy Kills World, Bill Skarsgård (John Wick: Chapter 4) portrays a vengeance-driven man named Boy, who, as per the title, is more than ready to end the world for payback.

You can’t blame him for his unquenchable fury; when he was young, his family suffered tragic fates at the hands of the ruthless Van Der Koys, leaving him “orphaned, deaf, and voiceless”.

With a harrowing backstory, of course Boy has every right to seek revenge, which is why he has trained immensely to become an invaluable fighter with an inner voice supplied by none other than H. Jon Benjamin, best known for voicing Sterling Archer in Archer and Bob Belcher in Bob’s Burgers.

Boy Kills World reminds us of other vengeance-fuelled action thrillers with John Wick easily coming to mind, as well as the new Jordan Peele-produced film, Monkey Man, directed and starring Dev Patel.

But while the aforementioned films utilised solid action sequences and well-choreographed violence with relish, this new film provides all the same elements but without taking itself too seriously. It’s also set in a post-apocalyptic world, complementing its violence with enough quirkiness.

It tells the story of Boy, who was orphaned at a young age. The tragic death of his family at the hands of Hilda van der Koy, the matriarch of a savage family dynasty, has also left him mute and deaf.

To exact revenge, Boy must accomplish three crucial steps to end the Van der Koys’ reign of terror – pick an inner voice, which he got from his favourite childhood video game; train, get buff and get stronger, which he did thanks to a mysterious shaman who trained him religiously; and join a team, preferably comprising members that hate the Van der Koys as much as he does.

Having done every step with fiery gusto, Boy is all set to begin his lifelong dream of revenge and mayhem against those who killed his family, which he is set to unleash “on the eve of the annual culling of dissidents”, an barbaric tradition that the Van der Koys vigorously practice to root out rebels.

Directed by Moritz Mohr in his debut as a film director and produced by Sam Raimi, the movie is an action-packed tale of revenge that stars Skarsgård in his first lead role in a feature film.
