The ‘damsel in distress’ character has long been deemed outdated and replaced by fierce heroines, propagating “empowered damsel”  stories instead.

Movie heroines like Princess Leia, Sarah Connor, Katniss Everdeen, and Natasha Romanoff to TV’s iconic female heroes, including Buffy Summers, Veronica Mars, The X-Files‘ Dana Scully Mad Men’s Peggy Olson, Homeland’s Carrie Mathieson and Game of Thrones’ Arya Stark, and even Daenerys Targaryen (prior the GOT finale, of course), are just some of the characters that come to mind.

This year, we’ll be introduced to a new heroine (she just doesn’t know it yet) – Elodie. She’s played by Stranger Things‘ Millie Bobby Brown in the new dark fantasy film, Damsel, where meeting a handsome prince means being thrown into a dark cave rather than a happy ever after.

What’s in this Guide?

After being announced in March 2020, Damsel finally premieres on streaming, 8 March 2024. Millie Bobby Brown was confirmed to star in November 2020, where she also serves as an executive producer.

With only about two weeks before the premiere, don’t miss the new movie streaming on Friday, 8 March!

In the new dark fantasy film Damsel, Elodie (Brown) is a young, noblewoman who agrees to an arranged marriage. She does so because her father used the “your people need you” line and being the kind, dutiful girl that she is, she believes it’s an obligation to fulfill.

The guy she’s marrying, Prince Henry (Nick Robinson), is also dreamy with a seemingly righteous, royal family behind him, so what could go wrong, right?

Everything, it turns out. The family she’s marrying into has an ancient debt that needs repaying. In order for their kingdom to keep thriving, every generation must offer a sacrifice and that’s Princess Elodie – one of the long line of young women whose lives are offered to appease some kind of ancient entity.

Surviving her new husband and his family’s betrayal, she uses the inner warrior she didn’t know she had to survive her life’s most harrowing ordeal. And with her newfound fighting skills and untamed rage against the people who left her for dead, everyone can rest assured there’s hell to pay.

Damsel is directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, best known for his work in 28 Weeks Later, from a script written by Dan Mazeau (Fast X).  Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum produced the film.

Netflix will be streaming Damsel starring Millie Bobby Brown from 8 March.

No Netflix account yet? There’s no free trial but the streamer’s popular content makes TV buffs sign up for one anyway. There are three plans: Standard with Ads ($6.99), Standard ($16.99), and Premium ($22.99). Pricing may change anytime as well.
