Putting every expectant mother and expectant father at ease are the midwives at Nonnatus House in East London. In Australia, the new season kicks off with a holiday special on 9 January with the rest of the season to follow shortly afterward.

Fan favourite Helen George’s return as Trixie in Call the Midwife Season 12 was one of the previous season’s major highlights, especially since she was able to continue her romance with Matthew Aylward. The couple eventually married in the show’s season 12 finale, but their spectacular wedding was not without challenges. With the help of their loved ones, the ceremony took place as planned.

In Call the Midwife Season 13, it’s 1969 and Poplar is embracing home births under the guidance of the Sisters. Last year’s season also tackled poor housing challenges and health issues that the nuns, nurses, and midwives of Nonnatus House need to help overcome. Season 13 also introduced newcomers Joyce Highland (Renee Bailey) and Rosalind Clifford (Natalie Quarry).

As for upcoming Call the Midwife Season 14, it’ll answer all our lingering questions that Season 13’s cliffhanger finale had left us, particularly whether or not Trixie and Matthew’s fragile marriage will survive. The new season also marks the show heading to the 1970s, where the show, as per usual, will cover a wider variety of difficult subjects at the time.

The period drama features new and familiar faces. Amongst those who have been on the show from the get-go are Jenny Agutter as Sister Julienne, Judy Parfitt as Sister Monica Joan, Helen George as Nurse Trixie Franklin, Laura Main as Shelagh Turner, Stephen McGann as Dr. Turner, Cliff Parisi as Fred Buckle, Max Macmillan as Timothy Turner, Linda Bassett as Nurse Crane, and Daniel Laurie as Reggie Jackson.

It’s based on the memoirs of Jenny Worth, played by Jessica Raine as Jenny Lee, the original lead character on the show. Raine, however, left the series after the third season. Vanessa Redgrave provides narration with voiceovers in the role of “Mature Jenny”. Meanwhile, Georgie Glen’s Miss Higgins was introduced in Season 10 and Rebecca Gethings’ Sister Veronica in Season 12.

There’s no shortage of engaging drama, charming dialogues, and endearing characters in this beloved series, which has also been confirmed to continue airing until 2026.

For free streaming of Call the Midwife, Australia’s ABC network (and catch-up streaming ABC iView) sometimes broadcast episodes from prior seasons with ads.

From examining the plights of expecting mothers to helping four children often left to their own devices, and dealing with a quarantined children’s choir, there’s more than enough compelling drama to be had in this popular BBC series.

If you’re looking for TV shows similar to this one, period dramas like All Creatures Great and Small, Poldark, and Jane Eyre are just some of the titles you can find on BritBox’s library.

Sanditon, Downton Abbey, Anne with an E, Outlander, as well as medical shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Nurse Jackie, Royal Pains, and Max’s new medical drama The Pitt.
