What is the Despicable Me movie about?

The supervillain Gru and his army of minions have plans to conquer the world and become the best among all the world’s greatest villains. He shows no mercy to anyone just to get what he wants, showing his mom that he can be great at being bad.

That is until three little orphaned girls named Margo, Edith, and Agnes stumble their way into his house, and, well, his life too. From that point forward, Gru’s life priorities start to change. The succeeding movies show how Gru, a certified super villain, is slowly turning into a father, friend, and a hero the world never thought will have.

Aside from the Despicable Me movies, Illumination Studio also released a prequel featuring the funniest of the Despicable Me characters, Gru’s army of minions. Titled Minions, it premiered in 2015 while the sequel, Minions: The Rise of Gru, premieres in July 2022.

There are three Despicable Me movies and watching all of them in proper order proves to be more fun. That’s why we’ve listed all of them below and the year they launched.

1. Despicable Me (2010)

  • IMDB: 7.6/10

In a happy suburban neighborhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Hidden beneath this house is a vast secret hideout which comprises his secret life as a super-villain. In the first film of this franchise, a felonious super-villain Gru is planning the biggest heist in history – stealing the moon!

In order to execute his plans, he needs to steal a shrink ray from a research base. He succeeds but only for a rival villain, Vector, to snatch it from him. Eager to steal it back, he launches numerous attempts to penetrate Vector’s fortress, failing each time. When he sees three little orphaned girls being allowed to enter to sell cookies, he pretends to adopt them because that’s how far he’ll go when scheming.

There’s just one hiccup – the girls, with their immense will, are looking for a dad and he sort of learns to be one, eventually. Now he’s equipped with shrink rays, freeze rays, battle-ready vehicles for land and air, and most importantly, a bedtime story.

2. Despicable Me 2 (2013)

  • IMDB: 7.3/10

The world’s greatest villain Gru is back for a new adventure. Lucy Wilde, voiced by the talented Kristen Wiig, hires Gru to defeat a new villain, El Macho, and his evil Minions whom he transformed into violent rabid monsters using the stolen PX-41 serum. Later on, Gru finds out that the violent minions are actually his and that they were kidnapped without his knowledge.

Still adjusting to being a father to his three little girls, Gru also finds himself being attached to Lucy. With more and more people getting close to him, the notorious super-villain has now become a superhero for his loved ones.

3. Despicable Me 3 (2017)

  • IMDB: 6.2/10

In Despicable Me 3, Gru suddenly meets his long lost twin brother Dru. The twins have to team up to defeat their new enemy Balthazar Bratt, a 1980s child actor that grows up becoming a villain after being neglected and abandoned when his show was cancelled.

Gru is also accepted by The Anti-Villain League for his heroic acts but is fired after failing to catch Bratt. His minions are happy to welcome him back as a supervillain but he refuses. Gru then joins his brother in Freedonia but his vacation is soon interrupted with Balthazar being a vicious villain and ruining everyone’s day.
