If you thought Legally Blonde is just another chick flick with a 'dumb blonde' trope, think again!
In this light-hearted comedy classic, we meet the bubbly and extra girly Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon). Don't be fooled by her cliché passion for fashion and pet chihuahua (that's more of an accessory than a pet). Elle is actually much brighter than she looks, which we come to find out.
After being left heartbroken by her ex-boyfriend Warner Huntington III (Matthew Davis), she decides to impress him. Her plan is to get into the best university in America and study law. It's safe to say she defies all odds when she gets into Harvard Law School.
Elle, being the blonde girly-girl she is, gets a major reality check on her first day in class. She's faced with a bunch of stone-cold, high-achieving classmates, like Vivian Kensington (Selma Blair), and ultra strict professors.
Law school is nothing like what she expected it to be. But, when Emmett Richmond (Luke Wilson), a sweet teaching assistant, comes into the picture he sees her potential.
Everything starts to get real when Elle is given the opportunity to prove her abilities. She lands a major case and assists with it to prove she's no dim-witted blonde. Not only does Elle prove to others that she's got more smarts than others assume, but she also surprises herself.
Trendsetting Y2K outfits, a Jennifer Coolidge cameo, and a chihuahua — what's not to love?
Legally Blonde completely remixes the popular blonde girl trope, giving us a lovable, iconic it-girl who's full of hilarious one-liners. It gives us 6-inch heels and courtrooms, a combination we never thought we needed!
Here's what makes Legally Blonde a fabulous film:
After Elle rallies all of her abilities to land a spot at Harvard, she overcomes a huge challenge. This proves to everyone (including herself) that she's got the brains and self-determination needed to be a top lawyer.
Naturally, this sets up the sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003), where Elle becomes a successful lawyer. She finds her passion: fighting for animal rights, which drives the plot in the second film.
Legally Blonde (2001) isn't on any free-to-air channels at the moment, but definitely keep an eye out. If you've got a subscription to Netflix, Stan, or Prime Video, you can stream Legally Blonde at no extra cost. If you don't want to pay for a subscription, you can also claim a free trial.
Legally Blonde (2001) is a teen fave. It's rated PG-13, making it perfectly safe for anyone aged 13 and over. It does contain some mild sexual references and a bit of grown-up language. But overall, it's a pretty mellow movie that's easy and enjoyable to watch.
If you've finished Legally Blonde and are craving a film with a similar vibe, why not jump straight into the sequel: Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003)? Or, if you've already finished your Legally Blonde movie marathon, try Mean Girls (2004) and Miss Congeniality (2000).
Lots of streaming platforms have Legally Blonde (2001) ways. Watch Legally Blonde on Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV, and Stan. You can get all of these platforms on your phone, laptop/computer, smart TV, and tablet — stream any way you like.
