What is the Stans documentary about?
With hip-hop superstar Eminem at the centre, Stans delves into the rich yet complicated world of superfandom. The movie title is named after Eminem’s 2000 song “Stan”, about a super fan whose obsession with his favourite rapper led to tragic consequences. The iconic song also introduced the term “stan” when referring to extremely devoted fans.
The film examines the profound way the rapper’s music affects his fans from all over the world. It also includes must-see footage, personal stories from some of his dedicated fans, and interviews with Eminem himself. Through the perspective of his most loyal following, the documentary effectively captures the rapper’s career over the years and his remarkable rise to fame. Even better for Eminem fans, Stans features tracks that inspired the movie, plus previously unreleased music.
Stans was directed by Steven Leckart, with Eminem serving as producer alongside Paul Rosenberg, Tony DiSanto, Stuart Parr, Antoine Fuqua, and David L. Schiff. There are celebrity appearances as well, including Ed Sheeran and Adam Sandler, as well as frequent Eminem collaborators Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine. Devon Sawa, the actor who played Stan in the song’s music video, also appears in the film as part of its “stylised recreations”.
