Named one of 2023’s top 10 movies, Poor Things is another milestone for Stone and director Yorgos Lanthimos, who previously worked together in The Favourite.

The movie tells the story of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young Victorian woman who died by suicide. But her life did not end during that fateful night; surgeon and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Dafoe) found her body. He brought her back to life, but her behaviour and thinking have gone childlike.

Captivating Dr. Baxter’s assistant, Max McCandles (Ramy Youssef), Bella commits herself to him through the promise of marriage, later changing her mind and choosing freedom as she matures.

With her inevitable maturity she also chooses to run off with lawyer Duncan Wedderburn (Ruffalo), which then marks the beginning of a grand journey that introduces Bella to the world and all its beauty, quirks, sorrows, and complexities.

Yorgos Lanthimos directed the movie from a screenplay written by Tony McNamara, best known for co-writing The Favourite and Cruella, both films starring Emma Stone.

Poor Things is based on Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel of the same name.
