Broadband in Australia – The Ultimate Guide

What you need to know, how to choose – and where to save money. The word constantly shows up in the news and in conversation – broadband. That’s almost come to be shorthand for “the Internet” to a lot of people – but there’s actually a lot more to it than you’d think. It wasn’t all that long ago that most Australians hadn’t even heard of broadband, let alone connected to it – and yet now it’s not only part of our day to day lives, it’s a key part of national communications thanks to the NBN.

People will often talk about the NBN and broadband in general in a negative way – Australia, they’ll say, has under-performing broadband capabilities and that most of the modern-world is leaving us in their dust. But believe it or not, that’s actually a bit misleading. Sure, it’s taken us longer than many other countries to get started at building a modern broadband network, and as you probably know, political interference has meant that network’s taking longer to get completed than it should have.

But Australia is at a different stage of its mainstream Internet evolution – because up until the arrival of Netflix and other streaming services here, many people were perfectly happy with the broadband they had gotten used to – slow-to-middling (and mostly reliable) ADSL, through the ageing copper phone network. It did the job because the jobs that needed doing weren’t really all that demanding.

Impact of Internet Streaming

The emergence of the streaming TV era has changed all that, and coming along for the ride are things like constantly-updated computers, phones and tablets, video games that have grown to tens of gigabytes in size, and real-time voice and video calling as an everyday thing. Suddenly, broadband got really important – not just for gamers, but for everyone.

That’s where the NBN came in – and that’s where things soon got a little more complicated! But don’t worry – if you’re new to the whole broadband thing, there’s not actually a lot you need to know. You just need to be able to sort through all the jargon and get the broadband service you need.

And with so many options out there, it’s easy to get confused. Obviously, the easiest thing would be to find a great bundle deal – wrapping up your broadband internet, home phone, and even entertainment or mobile phone into the one best package with the one monthly payment. The good news is that with so many internet providers operating in Australia, there’s not only plenty of choice, but also plenty of well-priced deals to be found to suit your needs.

Getting Connected – The Options

There’s a range of ways to connect to broadband internet in the market, but for you, only one will be the main means of getting online. What’s available to you depends on where you live (and often, the type of building it is, such as an apartment building), whether you’re in a large city or small town, whether you were part of the TV cable rollout in the early 2000s, and whether the NBN has rolled out in your area yet.

Almost every internet provider you can look up online will be able to tell you what sort of connection you have at your place just from you typing in your address – that’s the first step in finding out what sort of broadband you can get. It’s important to remember that no matter what type of broadband you end up with, you’re still connecting to the same internet with access to the same stuff. But some connection types have greater advantages than others.

National Broadband Network

Yes, it’s been all over the news the past few years, but that’s because the National Broadband Network – the NBN, as it’s known – is the largest rollout of a communications network since the original Australian phone network was built more than a century ago. And like that network, it’s a slow process! Millions of people now have access to the NBN, and the real advantage for them is choice. Since the NBN levels the playing field for internet providers, there’s all kinds of providers to pick from – huge companies, small independents, and tons in between.

The NBN was intended to roll out as a network almost entirely built with fibre optic cables running right into homes; that was changed later to be a mix of technologies. Depending on where you live, you might have fibre to the home (FTTP), fibre to a box out in the street that connects to your phone line (FTTN) or several other options. Some are better than others, and you can’t pick which type you get – but as long as there’s no technical hassles and you pick a reliable internet provider and good plan, you’re going to enjoy much faster broadband than you’ve had before.

Cable

For many years, the go-to for fast broadband has been via the pay TV cables owned by Telstra/Foxtel and Optus – but that was only available to the relatively small percentage of people who were lucky enough to have a cable running past their home. Those services also meant you had to choose either Telstra or Optus and stick with them. Now that the NBN is rolling out, the Optus cable network’s being shut down and the Telstra/Foxtel one is being taken over and upgraded by the NBN. If your area has this technology (often called “HFC”) then you can look forward to fast, reliable broadband with higher speeds available in the future.

Satellite

Part of the NBN rollout was the promise that everyone in Australia would have access to it, no matter where they live. With that in mind, a special NBN satellite was launched into orbit to provide broadband via satellite to people who otherwise wouldn’t have access to the internet at all. Known as “SkyMuster”, it’s capable of delivering speedsabove the best that ADSL used to offer. It has its limitations – real-time communication for things like games aren’t so great, since the signal has to travel to orbit and back, which takes time. But for everyday internet use and even streaming video, it’s up to the task.

Mobile

Another option for people without access to “fixed” broadband (that is, delivered via installed cables) is mobile broadband running on 4G (and eventually, 5G) phone networks. This is an interesting option because thanks to intense competition in the mobile market, the cost of a decent-sized monthly mobile data plan has actually become quite reasonable – to the point where if you’re, say, renting a home without internet connected, you could just choose the mobile option. Data limits can still be comparatively low, though, so for streaming a lot of video (which uses a lot of data) it’s not the best option.

ADSL

People may have forgotten that it still exists, but good old ADSL broadband is still in use by millions of people, and is very much an option if the best connection to your home is still the copper phone line. ADSL is no slouch with a reasonably good connection – you can stream Netflix in 4K with it if you’re lucky – but its speed depends on how far away from the local phone exchange you are. And the speed you get is what you’re stuck with – until the NBN arrives in your area, that is!

Choosing a Broadband Plan

When you’re shopping around for a plan – regardless of what bundle that broadband plan comes with – there are some things you should be looking for as a priority to make sure you have a great internet experience with as few hassles as possible.

For example, if you’re a single person working full time and spending most of your waking hours away from home, you probably won’t ever use a substantial amount of monthly data – even with regular Netflix streaming. But if you’re a family with multiple kids who all have their own entertainment needs in addition to yours and your partner’s, you’ll find yourself chewing through a huge amount of data in no time. You probably would be fine with a contract plan, but you’ll want a connection that’s as fast as possible so multiple family members can use it at the same time without slowdown.

Students meanwhile, will spend an enormous amount of time online, both for study and for entertainment. If you’re into PC or console games there’s going to be some huge downloads in your future – go for unlimited data as a must-have, just for the peace of mind. But try and avoid that contract – you want the freedom to move around.

And if you’re running your own small business, look for an internet provider that offers business connections – you get priority support, some special perks useful for businesses like a fixed IP address, and in some cases, a guarantee of service reliability.

Unlimited Data

Over the last year or so in particular, competition has gotten really fierce between Australian internet providers, to the point where the idea of you having to stick to a limited amount of data each month are almost completely gone (except on low-cost plans, which are designed for people who aren’t going to use much data in the first place). With streaming services like Netflix, Stan and Amazon Prime now part of our regular TV viewing – and even Foxtel getting in on the action with on-demand streaming for its customers – the last thing you want to be doing is worrying about your data usage every time you watch or download something. If you’ve got a 4K television that’s even more data per show or movie, too – and it all adds up fast! Plans with unlimited data give you complete peace of mind – so if you’re a student with data concerns, a family with children who are active on the internet or a big fan of mobile gaming online, and do more than just browse the web and check emails, it should be priority number one.

No Contract

The great thing about the NBN in particular is that it makes it really easy for you, as the customer, to change providers with minimal hassle – it’s very different to the ADSL days where someone had to physically go down to the exchange and swap cables around. Of course, internet providers know this – and some of them don’t want you to have the chance to just walk out the door if you’re not happy with their service. They’ll ask you to agree to a contract – usually for 2 or 24 months – which effectively locks you in with that provider, even if you’re not happy. Thankfully, these days most providers offer plans without a contract at all – especially good news for renters and Pensioners using the internet, those looking for the ultimate flexibility! There are times when a contract plan can be a good move, though – better pricing, or included extras like a free NBN modem – but if you do choose to go with one, make sure you do your homework on what other customers think of that provider.

High Speed Broadband

The different technologies used in the NBN mean that the top speed your connection can have will vary – but if you’ve gone for the lower-cost options, chances are you’re not running at top speed by default. Some providers offer “speed packs” or “speed boosts” which bump up your connection speed for a price each month; most these days just give you a choice of speeds when you sign up. We’d recommend you go with a plan at least at the 25/5 speed tier, and if you’re planning on streaming or you have an internet-savvy family or a small business that needs to keep things moving quickly, go for 50/20 or higher. If you’re lucky enough to be on a FTTP connection, you’ll be able to connect at up to 1000 Mbps in the future, and 250 Mbps is possible today through providers like Aussie Broadband.

How to Bundle your Broadband and Save

Chances are that broadband internet isn’t the only way you’ll be keeping in touch with friends, family and the rest of your world. Now more than ever, communication services of all kinds are tied together – mobile phones can use broadband to make better quality calls, streaming services let you take your TV shows with you when you’re out and about, and the lines between phone calls, texts and internet messaging are becoming blurry.

The idea of bundling is nothing new – indeed, for many years you’ve been able to get bundles offering a home phone and mobile together, sometimes even with pay TV thrown into the mix. Internet provider Dodo famously used to bundle their internet with desirable items like laptops and tablet computers. But the NBN and the competitive mobile market has really opened up the floodgates when it comes to the potential for bundling – and you can save a lot of money by doing so!

That’s where our handy interactive broadband bundle comparison page comes into play. Instead of wading through the confusion of the many and varied internet provider web sites – where the actual details of available plans and bundles can often be hard to find – you can get an overview that exactly matches your needs, all in one place.

To get started, just choose the type of bundle you’re looking for – broadband with a phone service, or broadband plus phone plus TV entertainment. Then pick the connection type that you have available to you – NBN, ADSL or cable – as well as the amount of data you want per month (again, we recommend unlimited, but your needs may vary!) Pick a monthly price that sounds like the highest you’d want to pay for your bundle and hit the search button.

You’ll have an instant list of providers, bundle plans and details on what’s included, as well as details on the minimum costs and handy links to provider web sites to get more information.

Popular Broadband Bundles

As we said earlier, there are so many options available to you today – thanks largely to the NBN – that the best judge of what makes for a great value broadband bundle is you yourself. There’s a bundle for almost every monthly budget – whether you’re trying to get online without breaking the bank, or even if the sky’s the limit as you look for the fastest broadband money can buy.

With that in mind, here’s a sample of the sorts of great-value bundles that are out there right now – one-stop solutions to your communication and entertainment needs. All you need to do is pick the right fit for you!

Internet & Home Phone

A family with young kids needs lots of data with a nice fast download and upload speed. Offering a fast 50/20Mbps NBN broadband connection – plenty fast enough for the most demanding family – with unlimited data and a home phone with unlimited local and national calls, Sumo delivers great value with everything connected for only $63.89 per month – and yep, that includes phone line rental and as many calls as you can make!

Internet & Home Phone & Mobile Phone

Perfect for seniors is an “all in one” package that takes all the hassle out of getting different connections set up so you can have broadband, home phone and mobile. One of Australia’s most respected providers, Southern Phone has one of the best bundles on the market with their Triple Bundle, which ties together NBN broadband, a home phone and a mobile plan. Prices range from $64.90 to $122 per month, depending on how much broadband and mobile data you want. The sweet spot is definitely the middle tier – $82/month gets you 200GB broadband data, 7GB mobile data, unlimited calls on both home phone and mobile, and a wi-fi modem thrown in at no extra cost.

Internet & TV

If you’re single, living life large and never seem to be home when the stuff you want to see is on TV, iPrimus’s excellent Entertainment Bundle is well worth investigating. It comes with the acclaimed Fetch TV Mighty set-top box, a wonderful device that acts as your home television hub. It receives and records live TV, streams all the things from Netflix to YouTube, and delivers the Fetch TV premium channels to you via iPrimus’s blazingly fast network – dozens of channels of great entertainment, along with the latest movies and TV shows to rent or buy. With unlimited data at 50/20 Mbps, it’s great value at $110/month.

Internet & TV & Home Phone

If you’re a huge sports fan while your partner can’t get enough of Game of Thrones, you’ll probably be keen to have access to Foxtel – and the Telstra $99/month Unlimited + Streaming bundle is a real winner in that department. You get unlimited broadband – NBN or ADSL – on the fast and responsive Telstra network, running at a fast 50/20 Mbps. And you also get the acclaimed little Telstra TV streaming box – which can handle everything from Netflix and Stan to live TV from your antenna – and a two-year subscription to Foxtel Now from Telstra, the streaming version of Foxtel with all the channels you love. New customers also get the just-released Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2, which has automatic 4G backup so your internet never goes down – and lets you connect via 4G as soon as the modem is delivered, while you wait for connection of your full broadband service.
