What Happens in Twister?

In Twister, Mother Nature happens. It starts off with a flashback when a colossal tornado hits young Jo’s (Alexa Vega) family farm. When Jo (Helen Hunt) is grown up, she makes a new sensor device that changes the way tornados are studied. It can study them from the inside and gather fascinating data that no one’s ever collected before.

Tornados aren’t the only thing Jo is navigating. We find out pretty soon that she’s got an estranged husband, Bill (Bill Paxton), who shows up with divorce papers.  But, before the papers get signed, Bill decides to join Jo in one last adventure. Once teamed up, the pair go tornado hunting, which puts the technology — and their relationship — to the test.

With each tornado they chase, they find themselves dealing with a more perilous quest each time. Eventually, they catch up with one of the biggest, meanest tornados: the F5 Twister.

Why You’ll Love Twister

Twister is one of the most original, heart-racing action movies to have come out of the 90s. And, it still holds up today as one of the best!

If you’re into natural disaster films with a little bit of nerdy science and a dash of adventure? If yes, then you’ll love Twister as much as we do. It’s got the gritty charm you get with older films. And, let’s not forget to mention mind-blowing effects that make it hard to believe it’s from the 90s. Here’s everything you’ll love about Twister:

  • Heart-racing action: The storm sequences in this natural disaster film will absolutely blow you away.
  • Groundbreaking effects: The CGI in this 1996 film is way ahead of its time – it holds up surprisingly well.
  • First of its kind: Chasing twisters? It’s not exactly a plot you come across every day.
  • The perfect storm (we mean pair): Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton have an incredible chemistry that will sweep you up.
  • A nostalgic ride: The 90s soundtrack, 90s fashion, and 90s vibes that send you back in time.
  • A little emotional: Expect tear-jerking themes of loss, trauma, and reconnection.
  • Widely available: You can buy or rent Twister, stream it with a subscription, or even get it for free.
