To Die For (2023)

To Die For, directed by Jakin Cordova, is an audacious take on the hitman genre, cleverly intertwined with the absurdities of modern romance. The film centres on a hopeless romantic who doubles as a hitman, navigating the chaotic waters of online dating while evading those who wish to eliminate him. The narrative juxtaposes the protagonist's yearning for love against the backdrop of his violent profession, creating a unique blend of dark comedy and heartfelt moments. The performances are commendable, particularly the lead, who captures the character's internal conflict with finesse. The direction is sharp, employing a visual style that complements the film’s satirical tone. The pacing keeps viewers engaged, with unexpected twists that maintain suspense throughout. Overall, To Die For is a refreshing addition to the genre, offering both laughs and thought-provoking commentary on love and violence.

To Die For is a film that tries to balance romance and action but sometimes misses the mark. The premise of a hitman seeking love in the chaotic world of online dating is intriguing, yet the execution feels uneven. While there are moments of genuine humour and some clever writing, the film occasionally drags, losing momentum in the middle. The lead performance is charming, and there are flashes of brilliance in the script, but the film struggles to find its rhythm. It often flirts with darker themes, but the tonal shifts can feel jarring. If you're in the mood for something quirky and unconventional, To Die For might entertain you, but it may not fully satisfy those looking for a cohesive narrative. It's a mixed bag that leaves you wanting a bit more.
