If you're looking for a Tony Todd fix, here are some more movies and TV shows that you can stream.
The Man from Earth is a rare film unlike any other sci-fi out there. It's definitely one that rewards inquisitiveness — the more you wonder, the more you discover.
The plot follows university professor Dr John Oldman (David Lee Smith). He lets his pals and colleagues know that he’s suddenly making a move to leave town — a shock to everyone. As everyone gathers to bid him farewell, there’s a sense that John has a stranger past than what most thought. During his leaving soiree, John asks everyone to imagine if a man could survive from the prehistoric age until now.
He goes into detail, mentioning things like human history and ancient civilisation. The more he talks, the more apparent it is that he holds incredible knowledge. It’s almost impossible to have such information unless you lived back then, which we come to learn that he did. But, will his peers believe him?
There’s nothing quite like The Man from Earth. It’ll send you down a deep rabbit hole of philosophy, time, and human nature — we guarantee you’ll be sucked in. Here’s what makes The Man from Earth one of the best science fiction films of all time:
The Man from Earth is ready to stream on Amazon Prime. And, the best bit is that you get to watch it at no extra cost with your subscription. Other than The Man from Earth, you also get a bunch of other out-of-this-world sci-fi films on Amazon Video. High Life (2018), Under the Skin (2013), and Moon (2009) are just a few great ones out there.
The Man from Earth, written by Jon Cooper, is a mix of drama, mystery, and sci-fi. It touches on cool themes like human existence, history, humanity, time, and the future. If you’re into philosophy, this is the perfect sci-fi movie for you.
The Man from Earth is a pretty mature film that young kids won’t understand. The dialogue is too complex. And, there are some themes parents need to know about, like suicide and violence — not ideal for youngsters.
If your little ones fancy a sci-fi, there are a bunch of other options that are better suited to kids. After some extra-terrestrial action? Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra Terrestrial (1982) is a classic. Get it on Foxtel Go, Binge, and Apple TV. Want a bit of sci-fi mystery? A Wrinkle in Time (2018) has just that. Stream it on Disney+.
At the moment, there are two of these films out there. The first one is The Man from Earth (2007) and the second is The Man from Earth: Holocene (2017). The OG The Man from Earth film is hands-down the best one and definitely worth watching first.
The second movie is a contemporary take on the classic film. It draws from the original narrative, but with a fresher, more modern perspective. If you’re planning a sci-fi movie marathon, add these two films to the list.
Stream the sequel to The Man from Earth — The Man from Earth: Holocene (2017) — on Prime Video and Apple TV. We’ve got a few more picks like these films that will scratch that sci-fi itch.
If you want a mind-bender, Coherence (2013) will do the job. Stream it on Prime Video and Apple TV. Arrival (2016) will get the emotions rolling — get it on Stan and Paramount Plus. If you're craving some mystery, I'll Follow You Down (2013) won’t let you down. It’s on Prime Video.
