We’re well and truly in the age of streaming services, with the likes of Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney Plus dominating the market in recent years.

But there are more than just those giants of the streaming industry available. Now there’s BritBox Australia, which shows the best of British TV. And in this article, we’re going to give our BritBox Australia review.

What’s In this Review

What is BritBox?

The BritBox streaming service launched back in 2017, although it was long mooted that the service would never see the light of day due to concerns over fair competition. This is because it was created by two of the huge British telly companies, BBC and ITV, as a joint venture.

It’s a central hub for all the best of British television. Now, it’s a modern-day streaming platform that offers many of the same features as other streaming services. These are features such as being available on multiple devices and the ability to download shows and movies to watch offline.

There are countless hours of British comedy, dramas, and movies for you to stream from across the best British entertainment broadcasters. Notably, BBC, ITV, and Channel 4. Now, let’s dive deeper into our BritBox Australia review.

What’s on BritBox Australia?

BritBox Australia launched on 23 November 2020 – on what is known as ‘Doctor Who Day’ around the world. This came after it made a huge impact in the North American market, having currently surpassed over 1 million subscribers across the continent. And there are plenty of reasons why.

Classic British telly

Line of Duty

Who doesn’t love a bit of classic British TV? All-time greats such as Only Fools and Horses, The Office starring Ricky Gervais are all available on the streaming service.

Add to that list a number of recent BBC hits such as crime drama Line of Duty and remakes of old classics such as Pride and Prejudice. And you’re off to an excellent start.

There really is no end to the amount of classic TV you can access with a BritBox subscription. Mr Bean, Luther, Miranda and The Vicar of Dibley are all available to stream.

There are modern classics from Channel 4, too. This includes the likes of The Inbetweeners and Derry Girls, which will have you laughing for weeks on end. With new content getting added, there’s plenty more of the best BritBox shows you can stream instantly.

Top quality reality TV

The Great Pottery Throw Down Season 6

There’s so much to go at on BritBox when it comes to TV shows, with hugely popular reality series such as BBC’s mammoth global hit The Great British Sewing Bee available on the platform. Not to mention popular shows like The Great Pottery Throw Down, as well as newly released shows like Make It At Market.

Add into the mix on our BritBox Australia review some of the most popular shows to come out of the UK in the past decade or so. You’ve got all the reality TV you could ask for to keep you going for months on end!

Original BritBox content

Magpie Murders

Another thing to note in our BritBox Australia review is that it not only offers the chance to watch the best of British TV shows and movies. But they have also entered the original programming world, much like Disney Plus, Amazon Prime, and Netflix.

BritBox has produced shows such as Magpie Murders. This stars Leslie Manville at the centre of a twist on the classic murder mystery. Then there’s Hotel Portofino, a glamorous period drama set in beautiful Italy in the 1920s. Both of which have been released to rave reviews and with the potential for further series.

Another one of the top shows watched on BritBox is Murder in Provence. It’s another murder-mystery show set in the south of France. So there’s no end of crime dramas for you to get your fix. You can find out more about BritBox’s latest releases with our What’s on BritBox highlights page.

BritBox Movies

The Imitation Game
Benedict Cumberbatch in The Imitation Game

There are some great movies streaming on BritBox, too. And while there may not be the very latest blockbusters like most streaming services, there are enough classics and cult hits alike on offer to keep your cosy nights in front of the TV full of quality content.

One of the top movies is the ensemble classic The Duke. There are also major movies like The Imitation Game and hidden gems (particularly for film buffs) such as Northanger Abbey, a classic movie adapted from Jane Austen’s book.

How much does BritBox cost?

BritBox Australia Review Cost

A BritBox Australia subscription will set you back $9.99 per month. Thich comes in slightly less than the big hitters like Netflix and Disney Plus. You can also opt to pay for an annual subscription for $99.99.

This saves you money over the course of the year. And that is definitely worth it if you know you’re going to be bingeing the best of British television for months on end!

Unlike other streaming services, BritBox doesn’t offer a tiered subscription service, meaning there’s a flat fee for every customer.

You can take advantage of a seven-day free trial period at first. So you can check out the platform and what it offers free of charge before deciding whether to pay the monthly (or annual) fee. It’s worth noting, however, that you’ll need to cancel your subscription within your free trial to avoid paying for the next month.

How does BritBox compare to other streaming services?

While it’s quite a niche streaming TV platform, choosing BritBox is never going to be a bad idea – particularly if you’re nostalgic for the all-time favourite British programs. There’s certainly enough content to keep you entertained for a long time to come. But how does it stack up against the streaming giants?

While the price is cheaper than some of the better-known streaming services, there are some things to consider before opting to pay for a BritBox account. One is that there is rather limited children’s content compared to the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. There’s also the fact that there aren’t many recent and constantly up-to-date movies available on the platform.

While BritBox brings exclusive content, that’s not exactly a rarity in today’s world of streaming services. And originals in the BritBox library aren’t quite as big-hitting or well-known as the likes of Stranger Things or Game of Thrones.

That said, if you go for the free trial and figure out it’s worth a go, choosing the monthly subscription model means you can cancel anytime, due to the fact there’s no binding contract. So you can check out your favourite BritBox shows for a couple of months if necessary before deciding if it’s for you long term.

You can’t lose! It’s definitely worth checking out – especially if you’re a fan of British television.
