2019 Bend Supercars Review
The previous round of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship saw Scott McLaughlin’s incredible 2019 campaign continue, with the leader strengthening his position atop the standings with a win in the second race. All the while one of the greats of the sport in Jamie Whincup won for the first time this year.
McLaughlin is now more than 400 points over second-placed Fabian Coulthard, whose position is suddenly in jeopardy after faltering at the last event. McLaughlin has been dominant, winning 14 of 20 events so far this season including a run of six successive race wins. He appears a certainty to take out the Drivers Championship, and the competition for second place – likely to be fought between Coulthard, Shane van Gisbergen and Chaz Mostert – is looming as the most exciting battle in the run home. Bend SuperSprint Drivers to Watch
Scott McLaughlin broke through for an inaugural Series Championship in 2018, and he hasn’t wasted anytime trying to add to that collection with a blistering start to the 2019 season. He has dominated all year and appears to have an insurmountable lead atop the standings, and with 14 wins from 20 races this year it would be a surprise if he doesn’t take out at least one race at this event.
Jamie Whincup has won one of the two races at the inaugural Bend SuperSprint last year, and though the veteran hasn’t been at the level to which we’ve become accustomed so far in 2019, he has come into some good form of late.
Shane van Gisbergen is coming hard at Fabian Coulthard for second place, and having taken out the only Bend SuperSprint in history he will feel confident heading into this event. Another victory would see him close the gap further and set up an exciting final few events of the season.
