A New York party girl, a hyper-disciplined kid, and a heartwarming unexpected friendship — that’s Uptown Girls.
The movie gets going with a former rich party girl and daughter of a famed rockstar, Molly (Brittany Murphy) when her world completely turns upside down. Molly realises that her money has disappeared. She’s left devastated, broke, and in need of work in the harsh world of New York City.
Molly manages to land a job as a nanny for a young girl, with an old mind, Ray (Dakota Fanning). Molly’s carefree attitude and Ray’s serious attitude cause endless headbutting — but they do learn some things from each other.
Somehow, the two obnoxious lead characters develop an unlikely bond and become rather fond of each other. Meanwhile, in Molly’s personal life, she’s got romance brewing with Neal (Jesse Spencer, a struggling musician.
Uptown Girls isn’t your average chick flick with popular teens. With witty lines, laugh-out-loud moments, and a touching friendship, it’s hard not to fall in love with this movie!

Uptown Girls is a Lisa Davidowitz story. It’s directed by Boaz Yakin, who also made blockbuster hits like Safe (2012) and Max (2015). Screenplay by Julia Dahl, who also wrote From Other Worlds (2004), and Mo Ogrodnik, the mastermind behind Ripe (1996).
You bet it is. Uptown Girls is a family-fave. Everyone of all ages will enjoy cosying up and watching this feel-good comedy. It’s rated PG-13, so if you’ve got youngsters younger than 13, parental guidance is advised.
Overall, the film is pretty mellow, so don’t worry about adult themes like nudity, explicit language, or violence. At most, there’s a little mild language, emotional drama, and a few cheeky jokes, but nothing too crazy.

Sort of — the story of Uptown Girls is all fiction, but the character Molly is heavily inspired by Allison Jacobs. Once a New York party girl who became a nanny, Alison’s past was the blueprint for Molly.
Other than Allison’s life being the inspiration for the main character, the film also takes note of New York life. It also touches on growing up and dealing with grief — things we can all relate to.
