Labyu with an Accent, directed by Malu Sevilla, offers a poignant narrative that resonates deeply with audiences familiar with the immigrant experience. The film follows Trisha, who returns to the Philippines after two decades in the US, and her interactions with Gabo, a man navigating life in his homeland. The performances are commendable, with the leads bringing authenticity to their roles. The film’s direction balances humour and emotional weight, allowing for a heartfelt exploration of identity and belonging. Cinematically, it captures the vibrant essence of the Philippines while delving into the complexities of love and family. While it may not break new ground in storytelling, its relatability and charm make it a worthwhile watch for those looking for a touching romantic drama.

★★★★★3/5
Labyu with an Accent is a film that wears its heart on its sleeve, but sometimes, it feels a bit too sentimental for its own good. Trisha's return to the Philippines sets the stage for a classic tale of love and self-discovery, yet the execution can feel predictable at times. The chemistry between Trisha and Gabo is palpable, but the plot occasionally meanders, losing its momentum. While the film attempts to tackle significant themes like identity and belonging, it sometimes falls into cliché territory. However, the vibrant visuals and cultural references provide a rich backdrop that fans of Filipino cinema will appreciate. Overall, it’s an enjoyable film that offers moments of warmth, even if it doesn't fully captivate.
