★★★★★4/5

Eternal, directed by Ulaa Salim, presents a poignant narrative that intertwines personal sacrifice with the pressing issue of climate change. The film centres on Elias, a dedicated scientist whose decision to prioritise his career over love leads him down a path of introspection and regret. Salim's direction is both thoughtful and impactful, allowing the audience to engage deeply with Elias’s internal conflict. The cinematography captures the vastness of the ocean and the intimacy of human relationships beautifully, creating a stark contrast between the two worlds. The performances, particularly from the leads, are compelling, with a chemistry that feels both genuine and heartbreaking. The film’s exploration of the 'what if' scenario adds a layer of complexity that resonates well, making it a reflective piece on the choices we make. While the pacing may seem slow at times, the emotional payoff is worth it, leaving viewers with much to ponder long after the credits roll.

★★★★★3/5

Eternal is a film that tries to balance romance and environmental themes but sometimes feels like it's treading water. The story of Elias and Anita is sweet, but the narrative can become a bit muddled, especially with the visions Elias experiences. While these moments are meant to add depth, they occasionally detract from the main storyline. The performances are solid, yet there are times when the dialogue feels a little forced, making it hard to fully connect with the characters. The cinematography is stunning, showcasing the ocean's beauty and danger, but I found myself wishing for a bit more urgency in the plot. Overall, Eternal has its heart in the right place, but it might leave some viewers wanting more excitement and clarity in its message.
