★★★★★4/5

Black Widow, directed by Paula Wittig, presents a chilling portrayal of one of Britain’s most notorious female murderers, Dena Thompson. The film meticulously chronicles her manipulative schemes as she lured unsuspecting men into her web of deceit. Wittig's direction is both sensitive and incisive, allowing the audience to witness the psychological complexities of Thompson's character. The performances are commendable, particularly the lead, who captures the duplicitous nature of Thompson with both charm and menace. The pacing is deliberate, building tension as the investigation unfolds, culminating in a powerful climax that leaves viewers reflecting on the nature of trust and betrayal. Overall, Black Widow is a thought-provoking examination of morality and manipulation that stands out in the true crime genre.

Editor Team

★★★★★3/5

Black Widow dives into the dark and twisted world of Dena Thompson, and while it has its moments, it sometimes feels like it’s treading familiar ground. The film does a decent job of portraying Thompson's manipulative tactics, but it lacks a certain depth that could have made her motivations more compelling. The pacing can drag, and there are moments where the narrative feels repetitive. However, the lead performance is captivating, bringing a chilling charisma to the role. The film’s exploration of trust is intriguing, yet it doesn’t fully delve into the psychological ramifications of Thompson’s actions. If you’re a fan of true crime stories, Black Widow offers an interesting watch, but it may not leave a lasting impression.
