There are some fantastic sides making up the 12 team WSL, check out some of the most popular below, featuring several Matildas players.

Arsenal Women

Arsenal Women are one of the most successful teams in English football, with a long history that goes back well before the birth of the WSL. They remain the only English team to have won the Women’s Champions League and are currently one of the favourites to win this year’s WSL. Within their squad are Australian players like Lydia Williams, Steph Catley and Caitlin Foord.

Chelsea Women

The rise of Chelsea Women’s football team can be put largely down to two names on and off the pitch. Sam Kerr’s transfer to the Blues in 2019 meant they had one of the best in business to put the ball in the back of the net. The tactical know-how of super coach Emma Hayes has ensured they are well-prepped off it.

Man City Women

Manchester City women may have only won the WSL once, but they have finished runners up five occasions. Chelsea has constantly been a thorn in their side, pipping them to the post four times, but with players like Lucy Bronze, Ellen White and two Aussies in the shape of Alanna Kennedy and Hayley Raso, City have the power to go all the way this year.

There may be some clear favourites in the race for WSL glory this year, but there’s also still a long way to go. Check out the current WSL League table here to stay on top of the standings.

For many years the English Premier League has been the standout tournament in men’s domestic football. But what was embarrassing to the big wigs at the English Football Association was that women’s football had barely squeezed out of amateur status. Women’s football had been growing throughout Europe in countries like France, Germany and Sweden, and the USA, but the country that invented the game couldn’t seem to find the time, or investment to offer their female stars a chance to shine.

That changed in 2010 with the launch of the Women’s Super League, a competition that has united fans of both men’s and women’s football for a nation where the sport has religious-like status. Uber clubs like Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester City now have teams that compete on a domestic and European women’s level, enticing the biggest names to English shores.

Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal have been the dominant sides over the past 10 years, with the former lifting the WSL trophy on four on three of the last four occasions. Emma Hayes’s side even reached the UEFA Women’s Champions League final last year, something no other English team had managed to do since Arsenal in 2007.

Check out which devices you can use to stream Optus Sport whether you’re at home or on the move.
