What’s In The Guide

Streaming NRL in Australia

The 2021 NRL Premiership takes place between March and October. Weekly action can be watched live via several sports streaming services in Australia. Plus, there are options for watching NRL outside Australia for those travelling or working overseas.

As well as regular-season games – there is also the State Of Origin series between New South Wales and Queensland. The Maroons caused one of the biggest upsets in State Of Origin history last year when they defeated the blues 2-1. On top of that, you can stream other league competitions like the Canterbury Cup, Nines and the English Super League. So, if you’re a dedicated Rugby League fan there’s plenty to get your teeth into!

Here we look at the best options for how to watch NRL live, how to claim offers and free trials and also the best devices to use when streaming online.

How to watch League live in Australia

Today, you can stream every game of the Telstra Premiership online right up till the Grand Final, live as it happens, with no ad breaks interrupting the action during the match. The NRL has its own dedicated Fox League channel, so that league fans have something to watch 24/7 – as well as a broadcast partnership on free to air with Nine (9Now).

Stream every NRL match replays on demand

These days we don’t always have the time to watch every live game as and when we want due to work and family commitments. Now it is easier to catch up match highlights later on-demand, however. Apps like Kayo even allow you to watch a specific game using the ‘No Spoilers’ feature, which ensures you don’t see any results before you’ve watched all the action at a more appropriate time.

Kayo also offers the unique Kayo Minis option for those who like to view quick, bite-sized match replays from the game featuring their favourite teams. NRL Live Pass customers can also watch replays of the latest games on demand. To access NRL Live Pass you will need an eligible mobile or broadband plan.

Free trials for NRL streaming

A great way to get NRL Live stream access – without paying a cent – is with a Kayo Free Trial. That means that if a particular match is coming up and you don’t have an existing subscription, you can simply check it all out for free with a trial. All you have to do to join is sign up, create an account and enjoy live league instantly.

Most of the best free trials are available to new and returning customers. Even though there is no trial available with Telstra, they do offer alternative discounts and reduced costs per month compared to the alternative options.

Plus, selected matches can be streamed for free via the live Nine broadcast and their sister service, 9Now each week. International audiences can also view live NRL via their country’s broadcast partner. In the UK, for example, this would be BT Sport, whilst the US partner is Fox.

Teams to look out for in 2021

Penrith Panthers

After losing out against Melbourne in 2020, Penrith Panthers are hoping to go one step further this season. They have a squad packed full of stars like Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai. You have to go all the way back to 2003 for the last time they went all the way, so you could say they are due one! Follow them as they make their challenge in 2021.

Melbourne Storm

One of the most consistent teams over the past 20 years in NRL has been Melbourne Storm. But this season they are dealing with life after Cameron Smith and looking to rebuild their team around a certain young superstar by the name of Ryan Papenhausen.

South Sydney Rabbitohs

The Bunnies go into 2021 as one of the favourites under the tutelage of Wayne Bennet. The South Sydney Rabbitohs last claimed Grand Final glory in 2013 when Sam Burgess captained the side. Now they have the talents of Latrell Mitchell at their disposal, anything can happen!

Sydney Roosters

The ‘Chucks’ have been going through a little rebuilding phase of late, but this season they are set and ready to make another push for the finals. James Tedesco will lead the Sydney Roosters‘ attack, but it is their defence that may hold them back.

Biggest games in 2021 NRL season

Roosters v Storm

These two teams are the most successful in the Australian Rugby League, playing the best rugby over the past 20 years. When they meet there is always plenty of bad blood, which was exacerbated by Cooper Cronk’s move from Melbourne to Sydney.

Rabbitohs v Dragons

When these sides meet it is war. They are two of the oldest sides in the game with a raft of heated head-to-heads that span decades. Even though the Bunnies have had the upper hand in terms of scores recently, games with the Dragons remain as tight and emotional as ever.

State Of Origin (QLD v NSW)

This year’s State Of Origin series will go back to its midseason slot after covid interruptions in 2020. Queensland pulled off one of the biggest upsets in State Of Origin history in 2020, but the Blues have been licking their wounds and have a few scores to settle. Will NSW be able to bounce back?
