★★★★★4/5
The Independent offers a riveting glimpse into the tumultuous world of political journalism during a crucial election period. The film's narrative deftly intertwines personal ambition with broader societal implications, as it follows a young journalist who teams up with a seasoned veteran to uncover a conspiracy that could alter the course of history. The performances are commendable, particularly from the leads, who embody their characters with authenticity and depth. The direction is tight, managing to maintain tension throughout while also allowing for moments of reflection on the ethical responsibilities of the press. While the pacing occasionally falters, particularly in the middle act, the film ultimately delivers a powerful commentary on the state of democracy and the role of journalism in shaping public discourse. It is a thought-provoking watch that resonates in today's political climate.

★★★★★3/5
The Independent is an ambitious political thriller that tries to tackle the heavy themes of media integrity and electoral conspiracies. While the premise is engaging, the execution sometimes feels uneven. The lead performances bring a certain charisma, but the script occasionally leans into cliché territory. There are moments that spark intrigue, especially when the conspiracy unfolds, but the film struggles to maintain momentum. The dialogue can feel a bit on-the-nose, and the pacing dips in parts, making it hard to stay fully engaged. However, the film does offer some thought-provoking moments about the role of journalism in democracy, making it worth a watch for those who enjoy political dramas. Just don’t expect a flawless execution of its ambitious ideas.
