★★★★★4/5
The Apothecary Diaries is an intriguing film that masterfully combines historical drama with elements of mystery. At its heart is the character of Maomao, played with finesse, whose journey from a mere servant to a skilled apothecary is both empowering and engaging. The film excels in its portrayal of palace life, revealing the intricate dynamics that govern the imperial household. The cinematography captures the opulence of the palace while juxtaposing it with Maomao's humble beginnings, creating a visually appealing contrast. The pacing is steady, allowing for character development and plot progression without feeling rushed. However, some may find the medical explanations a bit dense, which could detract from the overall enjoyment. Overall, The Apothecary Diaries is a commendable film that invites viewers into a world of intrigue and intelligence, making it a worthwhile addition to the historical drama genre.

★★★★★3/5
The Apothecary Diaries is a film that tries to blend historical intrigue with a dash of medical mystery, but it sometimes feels like it’s trying too hard to impress. Maomao’s character shines, and her cleverness is admirable, yet the film often meanders through its plot, leaving some threads unresolved. The performances are solid, especially from the lead, who brings a refreshing energy to the screen. However, the pacing can drag at points, making it a bit of a slog in places. While the film has moments of brilliance, it also suffers from uneven storytelling that might leave viewers wanting more clarity. If you love period dramas with a twist, you may find enjoyment here, but be prepared for a few bumps along the way.
