★★★★★4/5

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin presents an intriguing narrative that intricately weaves the themes of duty and personal growth. The film follows Princess Sakuna, who transitions from a life of complacency to one filled with challenges and responsibilities after her banishment. The contrast between her initial laziness and her evolution into a dedicated warrior and farmer is striking. The animation is visually stunning, capturing the lush beauty of the island and the vibrant colours of the rice fields. The direction is commendable, balancing action sequences with moments of introspection. The film’s pacing allows for character development, making Sakuna’s journey relatable. While it may not break new ground in storytelling, it captivates with its charming aesthetic and heartfelt messages, making it a worthwhile watch for audiences seeking both adventure and depth.

★★★★★3.5/5

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is a delightful yet familiar tale of growth and adventure. At its core, it’s about a spoiled princess who must grapple with the reality of hard work after being cast away to an island filled with demons. The film does a fantastic job of blending quirky humour with moments of genuine emotion, especially as we watch Sakuna evolve. The animation is gorgeous, with bright colours and detailed backgrounds that bring the world to life. However, I found some aspects predictable, with character arcs that follow a well-trodden path. The farming mechanics add a unique twist but can feel a bit slow for those seeking constant action. Overall, it’s an enjoyable experience that balances levity and seriousness, appealing to fans of both fantasy and slice-of-life genres.
