★★★★★4/5
Poker Face is an enthralling addition to the mystery genre, offering a fresh perspective with its unique protagonist, Charlie Cale. Portrayed brilliantly, Charlie's ability to detect lies propels the narrative, creating an engaging series of episodic mysteries. The show's structure allows for a variety of intriguing characters and plots, making each episode feel distinct yet interconnected. Director Rian Johnson's knack for suspense and clever dialogue shines through, ensuring that viewers are kept on their toes. While the series occasionally leans into familiar tropes, it manages to subvert expectations, providing surprising twists that keep the audience guessing. Overall, Poker Face is a delightful watch for fans of the genre, blending humour with darker themes in a way that feels refreshing.

★★★★★3/5
Poker Face has its moments but ultimately falls short of its potential. The premise is undeniably intriguing: a woman who can tell when others are lying. However, as Charlie Cale (played with charm) travels from one crime scene to another, the episodic format sometimes leads to uneven pacing. While some episodes are gripping, others feel like they drag on, lacking the punch needed to keep viewers fully engaged. The performances are solid, but the writing occasionally falters, missing opportunities for deeper character exploration. It’s enjoyable enough for a casual watch, especially for mystery enthusiasts, but it doesn’t quite leave a lasting impression. If you’re looking for something light and entertaining, Poker Face fits the bill, but don’t expect it to redefine the genre.
