★★★★★4/5

Mama, I'm Home presents a harrowing narrative that captures the essence of a mother's love amidst tragedy. Tonya, portrayed with gripping authenticity, is a bus driver whose life spirals into chaos upon receiving the devastating news of her son's death in Syria. The film's direction is commendable, weaving together moments of despair and hope, while the cinematography beautifully captures the stark yet intimate landscape of Kabardino-Balkaria. The emotional depth is palpable, particularly in scenes where Tonya confronts the authorities, showcasing her fierce determination. However, the pacing occasionally falters, leading to moments that feel drawn out. Despite this, the film triumphs in its portrayal of resilience and the indomitable spirit of a mother, making it a poignant watch that lingers in the mind long after the credits roll.

The film's emotional core is undeniably strong, thanks to a standout performance that brings Tonya's grief and tenacity to life. The story grips you from the start, pulling you into a world filled with despair and hope. Yet, while the themes are powerful, the pacing can sometimes drag, leaving you wishing for a tighter narrative flow. The cinematography does a fantastic job of highlighting the stark beauty of the setting, which contrasts sharply with the film's heavy subject matter.
